Any woodworkers?

OK I am itching to start getting this thing poured but before I do I have to secure the two sides together, Since I am leaving the bark on I risk ripping the bark off a whole side if I don't. This also leads to how I want to make legs for it. I have been looking at different legs for a month. Metal, wood, turned, square, round etc. That decided on how I would make the connection. I decided on using the dementional Walnut above with a slot for another 2" live slab for the legs. I will glue and dowel the plates to the bottom of the table then have four all threads with fancy nuts for each side to hold the legs in place.



All those angles is why I ordered the Incra guage.

 

yep, I ordered a new fence also. As somehow the original has a warp in it. It may have been there from the start. So hopefully I can cut straight lines for cutting boards.

Your chairs just brought back a lot of memories. My grandparents had ones very similar to these, solid wood and heavy as hell! All the ones I see now have a flat seat, not curved down like this. Awesome job! Where did you get the plans for those?

 

I think it was Sunset or Sunshine, can't be sure it was 40 years ago. I made templates of all the parts. They are the most comfortable ADK chairs I have ever sat in. The curves are the secret. I made many sets when I was working to be auctioned off at events. Most were black walnut like those in the photos. My latest were Marine Corps and navy versions for my family members in quarter sawn oak. Walnut units are my favorites. Thanks for the props.

 

I ended up using a 1 1/4" live edge board to make the leg mounting brackets on the CNC. 3 - 3/8" dowels on each side. Then a lot of glue and clamps to hold it together.



Then finally I was able to make my first of many pours. I made two 30 oz batches, one a little darker than the other then poured them from opposite ends. I mixed them up where they met to make it look like currents.



One layer per day so it's going to be a while before any more updates.

 

Sorry I haven't been paying attention to this thread too much. Are you going with the glowing blue up the middle or just a blue? And what product do you use for this? I gotta get into more woodworking forums...

 

It's a

$70 Epoxy Resin Kit 2 Gallon-Crystal Clear, UV Resistant, Self Leveling, Food Safe for Table Top, Arts and Crafts, Wood Casting, Jewelry Making, Use with Mica Powder, Silicone Molds, Alcohol Ink

clear two part acrylic resin. I added

Resin Obsession Transparent Blue Color Pigment - 1 Ounce

blue pigment for the center. I am using various amounts of the pigment to give each layer a wavy pattern to look like currents of water. It looks even better after adding a second of 20 or more layers.

Once it's done I will encapsulate the whole thing in 1/4 inch of clear resin and route the edges to match the wood within.

I did not add glowing powder. I did buy a LED multi color light strip I was going to embed in it but changed my mind.

 

I can't wait to see how your project comes out. Its fascinating to see you and another woodworker I know who uses mammoth tusk and bone with resin to create the most amazing handgrips for pistols. Its giving me ideas to enhance some of my new projects, Thanks much.

 

Wanted to post some tiger flame maple work I did recently. Love wood with character.

 

Are you at all concerned with seasonal wood movement? It looks like those glued and pegged brackets could potentially cause issues down the road.

 

I use mine quite a bit on the unisaw. I have various sleds that get a lot of action for 90 degree work.

 

No, that should not be a problem. It will be indoors so the heat and humidity don't change that much. I was more concerned about ripping out the bark.

It's almost there. About 1/2" to go. One thing that is pretty cool. A few minutes after you do a pour all the bubbles rise to the top. You hit it with a torch and they simply vanish. I wish I could get a better picture of the swirl pattern. The camera just wants to reflect everything in the garage.



I'm sure once it's pulled away from the melamine it will be easier to get a good photo of it.
