If the rear door is not shut all the way there should be a warning chime and possibly a visual notification on the dash between the speedo and tach.

So then that leads me to believe the rear door is shut. Is the light on even when the engine is off?

I didn't ask that but it's a good question that needs to be asked!

She said she opened all the doors and closed them and there was no dash alert or chime

Well, the warning would only be if she turned the vehicle off to remind you it is still open or if she put the vehicle into drive while it's running to warn you it's open. What year is it. I thought it was fairly new.

Ok, my truck will warn me if the sunroof is open when i turn it off to remind me to close it.
It wont do anything while the truck is running.

The rear hatch is a major safety issue being open while the vehicle is running because someone could be back there and fall out. I can't imagine that you can have that vehicle running with the hatch open and some bell or chime and visual notice not be evident.

With all that said, if the truck is off, and the rear door is open the dome light should stay on. If every door and the hatch is closed, and the dome light is still on then there might be a physical switch in the on position keeping it on.

My truck is set so that all the lights, the two maps and dome, come on when I approach or open any door. While the doors are closed, running or not, if I use the rocker switch on the front map light panel and turn it to on, all the lights come on, then, each light, both maps and the dome has an independent off/on switch. I can turn them all on independently at any time, while the vehicle is running or not.

With that said, if that dome light is on all the time and doesn't go off after you've tried the switch at the dome light then there is a short somewhere and ultimately the bulb will burn out, you hope. If not it could get hot enough to melt some plastic or worse.

This is my first time to Tennessee and I couldn’t help but notice that every single surface in Knoxville is covered in orange and white right now. Apparently there’s a really big football game this weekend.....
