Buy the wreck back from the insurance company for $800, saw away the body, throw an exoskeleton on it, and make the first 3rd Gen bush-buggy out of it.

I would think the steel sliders would reduce crumple and possibly make truck slide laterally more, or potentially flip (up or down).

It would the steel would be more rigid and crumple less transferring the energy elsewhere. The crumple absorbs so much energy as it's designed to do. Replacing with a less giving metal would reduce this. If it didn't crumple in this way, and stayed more solid I wouldnt be surprised if the force would be enough to roll the whole truck.

 

Glad the OP is ok and it sucks that his truck got totaled. I believe this NHSTA Test is at 35 MPH and appears to end up with similar damage to the OP.

 

I watched the vid and I find it off the glass on the driver side didn’t break.

 

The damage doesn’t necessarily increase in direct correlation to speed increase. It would if the truck was bolted to the ground, but when a vehicle takes an impact at that speed the tires will break loose and it will slide, decreasing the amount of energy transferred directly into the vehicle. I’ve seen a lot of wrecks from 5 mph to 85 mph and it’s totally plausible for that damage to come from a 65 mph impact.

 

I cry every time I see one of our fallen brothers! I saw a blue access cab that got rear ended by a big ass ford pick up the other day, looked like it was going to be totaled.

 

I'll take less crumple on my side doors please. Anyone know someone who makes sliders that bolt onto sliders?

The damage on that video mirrors OP’s.

Speed x mass = force of impact. Greater force = more damage.

 

Might be confusing momentum (mass and speed) with force (mass and acceleration).

If you have the exact same acceleration (forces from slipping tires) then you habr the same force. Now more work is done by those tires to dissipate the higher energy, but you cant automatically assume that the forces are equal.

 

Maybe OP meant that he was going 65.
It's hard for him to know how fast the car that t-boned him was going... else he could have avoided the crash entirely?

Car that hit me was speeding. Speed limit was 55. The aluminum steps ripped off like opening a coke can. Spun around 180 degrees. Already looking at another black one.

 

You'd be shocked. The salvage value on my 2013 in 2016 was $13,000. I originally went through the at-fault party's insurance in my total loss and they wanted to give me a settlement less salvage and return the truck to me. They had salvage value at $13,000. My insurance gave me a good settlement and took the truck.

 

Clear case of "you should see the other guy"

 

Well.....$13000 is kinda pushing past my personal limit for bush buggy. I tap out at $2500.

 

I have Gap insurance but I was issued a failure to yeild ticket so idk how this will play out
