    Asians like good grammar.

Actually, most people like people that use good grammar.

    So here's what happened today:

I went to a store that offers DMV services for a small fee so I didn't have to wait in line for hours at the actual DMV. I sought to do three things:

    1. Transfer the trailer into my name, obtain a Title, and a new CA Permanent Trailer Identification plate.
    2. Transfer the Honda Civic title into my name
    3. Transfer the 5-Lug from Vermont to California
I got as far as Step 1. The Civic has about $600 of backfees on it: taxes, CHP fines, etc. I couldn't transfer it today because I didn't have the SMOG certificate.

Now here's what got me nervous: I tried transferring the 5-Lug into CA. I gave the clerk the Vermont Registration, and he asked me for the title. Of course, I didn't have a title since Vermont doesn't issue titles to vehicles older than 15 years old. He did not know this, so he called the DMV across the street. The woman she called told him the same thing I did. Great, so we can go along with the transfer.

But, here's the problem. His computer wouldn't let him proceed, there was a flag in the CA DMV database. The vehicle has been previous registered with California, and cannot be registered in the state any longer until the backfees (of almost $2,000) are paid. He said, however, if you take it to the CA DMV and treat it as a normal out of state transfer, it may only be $300.

That's where I called it, this was getting too stressful and I know for sure the actual DMV will give me shit about it. The Vermont method only works if you buy a vehicle not previously registered in your home state. So I will have to be selling it out of state.

Back to the Civic, I told him about the whole SMOG monitors issue, and how I can't even drive the car. Then he told me 'I know a guy who knows a guy' and gave me the phone number of a guy named Manuel who, as he heavily implied, will SMOG any car. 'You didn't hear it from me'

I also got a moving permit, so I can try to get the Civic SMOG monitors ready myself. I'll use Manuel as a last resort.

Dude just part out that truck and junk the civic. I wouldn't see them as anything but stranded assets if you try and register them.

I have a buyer for the Civic at $2,500.

    It was free.

I might just scrap the 5-Lug.

Like I said, I can sell the 5-Lug in any of the other 49 states. Just not California.

    @Empty_Lord Toyed about wanting it.

I'm sure I can find a buyer for it, it's a rust free truck.

I don't think I asked anyone if I should buy it or not, I just bought it.

When we're talking about cars and California, you have to realize they're worth a lot more here than any other state. My 5-Lug is worthless in most states, along with the Civic.

High mileage examples of a 2006 Civic are listed on the SF Bay Craigslist for $2,000, with the best examples being $6,000. I have the cheapest running and driving 2006 Honda Civic if I listed it on Craigslist right now. My asking price of $2,500 is even low.

I'd suggest not trying to skate by on a smog check by bribing a smog tech. That's when a free car can turn into a $150-$1000 fine

That's why I got the moving permit. I'm going to be driving it around getting the monitors ready.

He couldn’t register it even if it was a Frankenstein truck? I figured there would be a different process for that

Well the cab would have the same VIN connected with the Vermont plates.

He can keep it reg'd in Vermont, nothing is stopping him from just renewing in Vermont.
