The energy would be transferred to the frame until the bolts holding them on sheared. That would likely push the vehicle laterally more. Maybe Mobtown and Toyota can partner up for 3-4 crash tests so we can get some real data.

Um. He loves black. Either you bought a black truck or you dropped the ball. Hopefully he can get his wheels and suspension off.

Sadly, if you where issued a failure to yield ticket, it was your fault. doesn't matter at all, everyone is ok and safe, that's what matters.

Ouch - glad you and if you had other occupants are all okay and walked away! I hope the folks who hit you walked away as well. Good luck on your new truck

Its your fault the accident happened but insurance will still pay out, that doesn't matter. It would only be a problem if you did something to invalidate your policy like let an unlicensed person drive it, etc.

Best thing is you’re alright, the truck will be replaced in no time.

Good to see that the truck can protect you in such an impact and that it did not roll over.

Glad you’re not hurt too bad. Even low energy crashes can be pretty brutal.

Based on the car plus your truck, I’d estimate impact speed at 45-55 mph. If the car was speeding, it slowed prior to impact. I’d believe it could have been speeding, but was likely at or under the limit at impact.

On a 65 mph impact, I’d bet on some significant injuries, especially in the vehicle that was t-boned.

I worked a head-on last month that resulted in two fatalities. Closing speed was maybe 60-63 mph. The size difference was greater (Silverado vs Neon) so it’s not a direct comparison to this crash, but the damage was worse.

In Oklahoma typically you lose your right to yield at 21+ over the limit, meaning if the limit was 55 and the car was traveling 76+, then the truck driver wouldn’t be expected to yield because he wouldn’t expect the car to get to him so quickly.

Since you got a FTY ticket, this indicates the officer/trooper thought the car’s speed wasn’t excessive. Did it play a role and was it a contributing factor? Maybe, but apparently not as much as failing to yield from a stop sign.

I’d like to see the length of skid marks from the car, if there were any. Maybe you could at least see some shadows from the ABS. That could help determine speed.

Get your insurance company to work for you. If you genuinely think the car was speeding, then get them to subpoena the CDR or airbag module. That looks like a newer car (Buick, Nissan maybe?) so it should have good data to include speed, throttle position, and brake application up to impact. If it was speeding, and braked, even that little bit could help when it comes to the insurance companies putting percentages to the fault.

Am I the only one impressed by how the rear passenger window frame is totally collapsed but the window itself looks in tact?

I used to work in crash safety at Ford and this conversation has come up. I’m of the opinion that frame sliders would act as a load path, transferring force from the impact to the frame sooner and at different location than they would be if under normal side impact loading condition. Normally the door frame, rocker panel, and underbody all act as the load path and they are designed with very specific details that allow for favorable impulse levels experiences by the passengers. Basically in the accident the acceleration is controlled to minimize injury to the occupants, while also trying to minimize the intrusion into the occupancy space. That’s usually done through clever use of “crumple zones,” and tweaking the material and gage of sheet metal and braces in order to accomplish favorable results. When you go and add a different load path this could drastically change the acceleration curves (impulse levels) that the passengers experience, which could be very bad. However, historically, the side impact difficulty is with not having much crumple room at all, and injuries occur because of intrusion into the occupant space. Maaaybe, the rock sliders might help with this, but also there is a big change in the impulse levels and that could be bad.

I really only mention this to try and make the point that the vehicle is designed, with 10’s of thousands of engineering hours (in fact crash safety is the most expensive part of vehicle development), in order to make all of these pieces on the vehicle work together in a very complex and dynamic event. Changing parts of the car that directly interact with this can have a lot of unintended effects that you may not even realize the severity of, and you can not really be sure of unless similar analysis is performed with simulations and testing to verify.

I have rock sliders on my truck though, for whatever it’s worth

    Like, so many.
Walked away with a scraped knuckle. I was very thankful for the engineers who designed and workers who built my truck that day.
