2nd gen. was a great truck! IMO Toyota cut both costs and corners on the 3rd gens. I love my '17 but would take a new 2nd gen over it any day.

You could always try painting the chrome ones with Duplicolor Perfect Match in a rattle can. I'd suggest using a 400 grit or better wet and dry paper prior to painting to get good adhesion. Can of Duplicolor is about $13.

Now that you say that a local dealer had a 2015 access cab 4 x 4 with 8,000 miles on it, for $25k, that I nearly bought while getting frustrated looking for a new 2016. If I only knew then what I know now. I do love my 2016 but.......

You're got company there Brother. I'm sure there are others experiencing a slight case of buyers remorse. Life's a crapshoot! Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. Every day we wake up and spin the wheel again, you just have to make the best of the hand your delt. Mod$ help ease some of the pain.:rofl:

Alright doll-face, c'mon and bore me!
Got a few things done recently. Like, took her to the spa on Thursday for a bath and exterior detailing. Did a nice job. Even cleaned up the interior and did the inside windows even though I didn't ask them to (or pay for it). There was a respectable tip for the guy when I picked it up. Of course, it rained later that night.

Also, got my WeatherTech mud flaps on:

    20181020_114432.jpg

I like the look of the molded flaps over the flat ones, but WeatherTech states that these were intended for oem tires only and they mean it.

    20181020_111809.jpg

Anything larger than these 265/70-17s and I think there'd be a clearance problem.

Like the look of no flaps, but totally dislike spending an hour-and-a-half cleaning road tar off the paint. These really aren't that noticeable.
I started out with the oem flaps, but the WeatherTechs are over an inch wider and gave better coverage of the tire area.

While were down there... What sort of heresy is this?

    20181020_112401.jpg

Disc brakes with drilled/slotted rotors? ON THE REAR?

Yep, wasn't happy with the feel, at the pedal, with the disc/drum combination. Too unpredictable for my taste. These are much smoother and consistent. Of course, that meant changing the master cylinder, too.

    20181020_111751.jpg

Had to add another reservoir for the clutch as this Sequoia (I think) master doesn't have any provision for a clutch.

Finally, added @mrproduxn (Steve's) low profile front plate mount with a WeatherTech plate frame.

    20181020_113507.jpg

Made a small dent in the mod pile. Would like to do some more today, but there's a 40mph wind blowing out there and it's supposed to get cold and rain later.

It was just one of those "why pay nearly as much for a 2015 when for a little more I can have the cool looking 2016" things. There are a lot of things I like in the 2016 (appearance, seats, fuel mileage, ride height, etc.) and a lot of things I really miss about the 2nd gens (power, structural integrity, real bumpers etc.).

We're pretty much on the same page. Two things I miss most are the real rear bumper and the spin-on oil filter. Maybe someone at Toyota watches these types of forums (TW & others) and will think about where they cut corners on future builds. I would have to do an awful lot more research before even considering purchasing the next generation Tacoma. This may be my last one.
I would rather pay more and get more than pay more and get less!
