The bummer is no interface harness for 98's from aem, just this:

Yeah it looks like unless you get lucky with having a model year that aem make a harness for like 95-97 for $150 that's the only way to go like you said.

    http://www.aemelectronics.com/files/npr/021110_extension_harnesses/extension_harness_apps_021110.pdf

The op of the thread I linked had made one out of a spare ecu which I didn't find a write up for but might be something I'd be willing to try if I can find a write up and a cheap ecu for like $1-200 if I get lucky. I think that's why the guy selling the aem controller and 7th must want 1200 cuz he has the harness but it's for an 02 or 03 he said.

I have big brake upgrade and 17s already. Tires have plenty of tread left. So I was gonna stay 17s. I like a wider stance. It feels like it handles better

what do 17s have to do with it having a wider stance??

all the more reason 95-97 is the best!

I was saying 17's clear all brakes and 3.5 bs gives wider stance

97 does seem like a sweet year - 98 at least has one cat in the exhaust

    misread that.

Yeah as far as I can tell 97 is the golden year for 1st gens. Though if you got an 04 with the 8'' front diff Id say thats pretty cherry too. But also would come with a bunch of other BS. 08 for 2nd gens.

So 3.5 is wider than 4.5. I always get mixed up talking about backspacing

yeah. So the smaller the number the close the mounting surface is to the edge of the inner part of the wheel.

3.5'' BS means the mounting surface is only 3.5'' away from the edge of the rim.

IMO, the sweet spot for backspacing is 4" on an 8" wide wheel. The wheel will poke out a little but not too much. Even with the bigger fender flares of the 01-04 models, 3.5" will fling mud all over the sides and top and into the bed. And for those trucks without bigger flares, it can be a pain in the ass. @turbodb

When talking about poke, it is important to note that rim width also plays a role. You linked to a 9" wide wheel, so compared to an 8" wide wheel, the 9s will stick out quite a bit further than the 8s when both have the same amount of backspacing.

Not sure if I'll ever do a full writeup on this. I did make a wiring diagram that I can post once I finalize it. It really is just running a lot of wires.

Personally, I think 4.5" backspacing is about perfect (and it's close to the OEM backspacing, I believe). I ended up with 13 gallons of mud in my bed after our last trip with 3.5" backspacing. Not to mention what was actually on the truck (sides, roof, top of the tent, hood, windshield, etc. LOL).

I'm going to write that up and have some pics - will tag you when I do. In the meantime, you can see tons of pics of my truck to see what 3.5" looks like with the SCS Stealth6's.

3.75 isn't bad either. 4.5 is stock though exactly just doesn't allow room for wide tires is all.
