i guess this would be considered a "noob" question

on my 4wd shifter what does the neutral do?

 

in what situation would i use this? ive always just skipped neutral when going from 4 hi to 4 lo

 

Possibly when being towed out of the mud.

 

i would think there isn't really any use for it unless your trans locks up somehow the transfer-case neutral would allow you to tow it. otherwise i think its just necessary in term of the internal workings of the T/C as i believe you have to have some break in power transmission to change your drive ratios when there is no clutch involved.

 

I dont know how true it is, but I always thought of the 4x4 neutral this same way. Kinda along the same lines as a manual transmission. There just needs to be a neutral spot in order to disengage one gear and engage the other.

 

oh ok i just figured i was missing a secret technique for this or something, but this helps a basically can continue what i was doing before and simply ignore the neutral

 

If you ever tow your truck (like behind a motor home) you can put the T-case in neutral and release the parking brake and you're good to go.
