These hippies piss me off as well. I think it's great they are that passionate about what they believe in, but there are better ways of shedding light onto a subject.

I have a friend from Iceland and she swears by Whale Meat. They have a hunt once a yr or a harvest i guess. She would rather have Whale than a burger. But I asked her opinion of the show she said it was stupid. It's their culture, in Iceland all the whales will eat all the fish and bla bla so they have a hunt to keep the food chain in order. That being said I dotn knwo why teh Japs need to go all teh way to Antarctica. I dont agree with either. I do like Kobe beef however.

Who's to say they don't hunt anywhere else? You have to remember it's summer in Janauary in the Antarctic.

They probably go there because that's where the whales migrate to.

Doesn't make a lot of sense to go whale hunting where there are no whales...

Yeah, someone earlier said the whale meat is not very popular or whatever, if that's the case why do they have a fleet of ships going all the way down there for a couple whales? I imagine there is a pretty stong market for it.

well damn, i could have sworn i read something about htem operating inthe bearing sea, and now when i look back at the article i cant find it anywhere.... so my bad i guess. but when the coats guard rammed im pretty sure that was off the coast of canada and i thought it was somewhere around the bearing straight. i could very well be wrong about that though....

I don't know anything about the whale meat/blubber/oil market, so I cannot comment on that.

Like several people have said, I think it's less of a market than a big "F-U" to the western world. I imagine there is a certain amount of legitimate business and research associated with the annual hunt, too.

I do know that the migratory path of the species of whales they hunt takes them to the oceans of the Antarctic in January, so that's probably why they go there.

I read about the Sea Shepherd program a couple years back in an issue of National Geographic Adventure. I've never watched the show because I really learned all I needed to from that article.

To summarize my opinions on the matter -- they're both wrong. The Japanese overhunt for their needs and/or culture and the Sea Shepherd people are idiots who endanger life and environment.

The solution to this is obviously to be solved through media attacks and cable network shows. That's how I would do it.:D

Im mostly with the whalers on this one. That being said i heard on the show the whalers set a "quota" of 50 endangered humpback whales. Im all for harvesting animals but only in a sustainable way. Hunting endangered animals does not meet that obligation.

Go on their site and read the volunteer application.
Basically, it says you'll work for no pay, sea going experience not needed, and that you are financially responsible for travel, insurance, etc.

I dont know about you guys, but having been a sailor, I wouldnt want a non-sailor messing with my vessel. We had them on board (Marines) and they screwed up a ton of stuff.

They also operate in various parts of the world. Not just out of Australia.

Did it have to do with beating seals? I think I know what you are thinking of.

i dont think so. i know it was sea Shepard, and i think it was the same captain but i'm not sure. i remember reading about it like a year ago. they were harassing a vessel (i think) coast guard said stop. hippies said no. coast guard rams hippies. hippies cry. hippies try to (or threaten to) sue the USA. end of story. i think it happened off the coast of canada because one of the members said coast guard was out of their jurisdiction and thats when i found out the coast guard patrols canadian waters too. but for some reason a sea shepard boat was operating in US waters.
