Hitch Vault

Lets try this again......my MODIFIED Hitch Vault

Took an old, beat up Bobby Labonte insert and cut the plate off.
Flipped the end of the insert around and glued the plastic to the metal face plate.
Used Gorilla glue clear and Crazy glue.
Glued the flat surface to the end of the Hitch Vault using same glues.

Made a 90+ mile trip on somewhat bumpy roads and glue has held up well.

Easy to open combination lock - as long as I have my glasses on!!!

Great product!!!! No one would know what it is except for you guys who see this.


NO disrespect meant to Manufacturers of the HV by hiding the emblem on the end, but feel safer this way.

did that plastic cover for the combo lock come with the lock? Looks fitted

 

Yes, the cover for the combo lock came with it. Only issue I had was it took several more days shipping than estimated and the transition from tracking via Canada mail to USPS was poor.....USPS really had no info once the transfer took place.

Would I buy it again???? YES!!!!!

Yeah Canada post hasn’t been the best, I’m going to look into other shipping companies like fedex or ups.

 

Hi, this looks like a great product, and I am definitely interested. I am not sure how it is water resistant if it is open on the sides where the pin runs through? It is not clear in the pictures, but is there a tube that runs through the box where the pin slides through? Thanks.

 

There isn’t a tube that runs through but the tolerances on the holes are snug enough on the pin that no water gets in there. Ive had mine on my truck for the past year or so and whenever I go into it there is no water inside.

I also haven’t gotten any feedback from anyone saying that water is a problem but if that were to happen we can possibly incorporate a tube into the vault. However you would lose a little bit of room inside the vault to accommodate the tube.

 

put the key into a zip lock baggie first??? Haven't had mine long enough to see if it is a problem or not, but, we had a downpour yesterday and today when I took the pictures it was dry inside.

Yeah for some reason I thought you were going to make Gen 2 without any logos. The thing looks so solid and I'm not worried about it being identified as a safe. I just hate logos etc.

what about putting the logo on the cover plate? still there, but hidden from view.

 

I just ordered one last week. It looks like a solid product. I am not worried about logos. It's locked up and if someone REALLY wanted in it, they could get it, with enough effort. This is perfect for when I go mountain biking and I need a place to stow my key.

 

How are you guys liking the vaults?

 

You can turn off the transmittal function of the Toyota Smart Key fob by holding down the lock button, then pushing the unlock button twice. The red LED will blink twice, two times in a row indicating it is disabled. Once you do this, it won’t transmit until you push any of the buttons on the key fob again. You can leave it in the vault or in your truck and no one will be able to get into your truck or start it.

 

I'll buy one for sure because I can see it was designed with security in mind. But one thing peeves me a little and that's when you say that it's 6061 military-grade aluminum. That is not the case and is marketing hype. Unless it's specifically mil-spec, then calling it military grade is no different than calling it Super Ultra Dynamic Heavy Duty. Also, this is square tube stock, cut to length w/machine counterbored slot and a hole for the combo-pin. Okay rant over and i'll have a beer for your ingenuity.

One quick question, how hard it is to take a wrench around the combo pin lock and twist it off?

 

Yeah it just means that it’s the same type that the military uses, which is just T6 6061. It’s just to let people know that it is durable and tough if they don’t know anything about metals.

As for the pin, it’s well built and people trust them to keep their trailers locked to their vehicles so I trust them. They are made by Trimax. I would love to design my own combo lock one day.

 

So the 6061-T6 is mil-spec? if it isn't mil-spec then the military doesn't use it. Also, one concern is that someone can take a wrench to the combo pin lock and twist it off. can that be done or not? Has anyone experienced that? I'm just asking from a point-of-failure point of view.
