If your laws allow it use a lockout and not a sub panel...

I'd run a spider box and cords. I'm not sure how all this grid and solar ties. It would be mostly for summer to run 2 fridges, one freezer and one or 2 smaller ac units. I don't think there are too many frostbite cases in Yuma.

A lock out allows you to detach from the main grid and have the ability to use any available circuit in the house using only one input cable from the gen.
No extension cords or swapping outlets

I mostly don't want a generator on that side of my house. Security and noise are a problem. I could run line around the house to it but that would be pretty pricey and I'd have to cross every other utility coming to the house. We don't lose power like you guys do for days. Cords and a box will work fine here.

Well up here the power goes out the gens take off.
    It’s normal.
As far as security a locked box with a gen pad and a chain would work.

You can put the gen anywhere you want.

The input box goes to that spot and run inside...
Does not have to be next to the panel.
My panel is at one corner on the front of the house.
My connection is at the other end, opposite side.
Not trying to persuade you, just giving you info.
I did the extension cord shit for years and it sucked..
Used the gen once since I did the whole house 2 years ago for 2hours and it was so
Much better. Quicker to set up and no worries of moving my fridge or freezer to hook up.

Kinda of a disappointing weekend here. Oktoberfest party at local bar, but no one wanted to attend. My wife offered to take me, but she's not a drinker. Stayed home instead. Sunday I was setup to pressure wash the deck, damn thing started dripping gas all around the carb. Checked everything and called the guy who fixed it last year. He's an odd one, so who knows what I should do next. Decided the sharpen and mow instead, but damn blades felt like they were welded on. Finally pulled the mower deck, flipped it, put a boot on the blade and smacked my socket wrench with a rubber mallet. Blades should be on with 70-100 ft-lbs and these damn sure weren't. I can generate much more with just my arms and this required arms, one leg and a mallet. Going to call my local Cub Cadet dealer and chat about this.
Other than that, we cranked the pool heater to 95 and I enjoyed the last on my Sierra Nevada beers tonight. At least that part went well.
Time for another work week... yeah.

I fully understand your motivation. If we still lived in NorCal I'd definitely do what you have done. We lost power up there regularly for weeks at a time and it sucked. Fortunately we had wood heat which I had to cut wood for anyway so that never changed. Cooking on the wood stove was a fairly easy change and heating pots of water was just an additional exercise. We usually kept the tub cleaned and full of water when big storms were expected since the well pump wouldn't work without power. Life up there was a lot more "pioneer". So now that I've been totally spoiled it would still kinda suck here but not all that bad. I think what would get us would be the wind knocking out poles and lines. I'd still have whatever the solar produced but would be SOL at night.

Trust me yesterday was ugly today ... Today I don't have a word for but stupid fits nicely. Note to self never hang 6'x8' Fence panels when the wind is 5-10 mph with gusts to 20 ish. Did it and all the hard panels are done but yeah just went straight chemistry no Scotch! As @Tacoma Mike said the hard part is getting on and of Baby K though unloading the panels on the forks then unloading them comes a close second .. Half way through I called a buddy who has been having heart issues and they are running test on if he felt up to coming over and operate the tractor my knees, feet and ankle were giving out. So with a a little ingenuity and the help of some clamps, forks and lifting strap they are hung. And I am DONE for now . I will have to clean up the shops tomorrow then Tues hang the four panels I have left then go pick up 30 more panels. The pup is happy to be able to run in the yard again and so am I .. 2 days of no real exercise for him GAHHHHHH :annoyed::annoyed::annoyed::annoyed::annoyed:.

@Ret CB and others who deal with the same shit , The crap coming from the big box stores SUCKS!!! just saying.
