Excellent info. Would you expect Toyota to do impact analysis with their accessories? For instance, their side tube steps?

That sucks because you’re at fault. Still, insurance will make you whole. You’re gonna feel it in your wallet when they up your rates, though. Regardless, no one was injured so that’s a good thing.

If it’s something they sell as a factory option I believe they have to homologate with it, but there may be exceptions when its only dealer installed stuff. There are also ways to get exceptions for things, but honestly I’m not 100% sure and that stuff was a little out of my area of expertise.

Side tube steps probably have next to zero impact on the impacts.

Gotta remember that sliders aren't frames. Couldn't find much data in 5 min of Google, but typical mild steel is in the 50-60ksi strength whereas truck frames can be in the 90-110ksi range. They do not (or should not) make roll cages from the same steel that sliders are made from.

Also, why are there requirements to even have roll cages? Didn't the manufacturer design their roof/doors strong enough?

Sliders also dont have a particularly good shape for side impacts. Yes, the impulse to the truck is higher. But for side impacts I want as little intrusion as possible.

The seat/belt/airbags are what matter in the passenger impulse department as far as I'm concerned. None of those things will help against the other guys engine block, whereas a rock slider could.

Their sliders are bolted to the body, not the frame. FYI.

They build the Tundra's tough too. My parents intentionally took theirs off roading. Flipped end over end 5 times. They bought another one.

And they advertise them as sliders/rock rails? That's weak

Gap has nothing to do with at fault.

I was in a similar accident in April, except I was on the giving end when a lady pulled out in front of me. She failed to yield, didn’t get a ticket and my insurance company is still battling it out as to who is 100% at fault. The best her insurance would do is 50/50. Luckily I was in my bmw, and I walked away with no injuries. Airbags everywhere.

Not sure how they advertise, but they do offer protection. Just not as much as a slider bolted to frame.

just looked it up, they call it "tubular rocker protection" so I guess I can't fault them for false advertising...although I'm sure someone somewhere has tried using a hi-lift on their's and learned a valuable lesson.

All these pulling out in front of you stories in here makes me glad I have a decent dash cam. Almost happened to me coming down one of the main roads in west SLC last night. She hit the brakes just in time, and I got to nerf her with the airhorn and ALL the LEDs up front.

I hadn't realized that. I thought that they were real sliders. Do we really not have a single member on here that hasn't been hit while running sliders?
