So I traded my 14 Frontier for this Tacoma about a month ago now. Let me start off by saying its a very well built truck feels nice and I got a great deal for it. However its got a tiny flaw...It Missfires under any mild to heavy load and it now when going down the highway it stutters. Now I checked the $6 and it does not show any missfires counted and it does not act like a dead fire.. more like a stutter. Now with AC off its surging 100-200 rpm at low idle It gets worse the longer it runs. This truck only has 2300 miles on it and I am starting to regret buying this pickup....I am not sure if this is something that the way toyota has the 4 cylinders set up with the shit tune (i see they remaped the V6 in the TSB) I am a tech for another shop but I should not have to be figuring out driveablity issues on a truck I just bought.. however my local dealer lost there last lead guy and now they are left with oil change techs for techs..so he could not replicate the issue (drive it down the road is all you have to do) instead he drives it a mile or so and parks it. I know driveablity is the biggest pain to diagnose...So I am curious if other 4cyl owners have had this issue. If not I will leave it with them again and let them try... Sadly I haven't even made my first payment on this truck and already in a rental...that I am paying for.....

if this is a tune issue not a mechanical failure I am curious if Orange Virus has anything on the ole 4 banger and if they want a test bed

    Cps is likely culprit

Edit: sorry missed the 2.7 detail

    Cps was 3.5 issue

I know what TSB your talking about that affects the 6cyls I believe the reluctor has to much anticorriosion on it screwing with the sensor. The 4cyls Reluctor is on the crank in the block. If I recall its been a whole min from the last time I played with a 2.7.. are the 2.7s having this issue?

Not to my knowledge, but I haven’t been paying much attention to 2.7 happenings. Hopefully someone more helpful will chime in :fingerscrossed:

Did you buy the truck from a dealer and did they wash the engine getting water into the spark plug holes? Did you pull the coils and look for water intrusion or carbon tracking or maybe oil contamination? If you road test it and watch live misfire data does it show anything?

Find another dealer? Seriously, this sounds like a warranty issue. You should probably find a shop with someone who knows what they are doing.

My guesses on the stutter would be something with the ignition system first.... fuel second.

I did remove the coils and plugs. I suspected the same thing. However they are dry no carbon tracking on the plugs no obvious archs on the boots. My scanner needs a update to read 2018s live data so I need to update. But in $6 didn’t show anything

Yeah I bought it new from the dealership. Its the closest one to me the next one being around 80 or so miles (this one is 40)

Go for a ride with the "tech" and service manager and point out the issue.

I had a dealership tech and service manager look at mine in the last 30 days. Both said IT'S SUPPOSED to do that. I sent a letter to Toyota telling them to fix it. They had a Toyota tech look at it 2 weeks ago. He agree, it's SUPPOSED to do that. I clarified, it's SUPPOSED to make the whole truck shake?? Not just that it is unfortunately the case, but that it was built to do that. He said yes. I told him I hoped he didn't really believe that. It has something to do with torque converter lock up that they've been trying to get right ever since the gen 3s came out. I agree though, it feels very similar to bad coils.

    I am lemoning mine now.

I have up to date computers but I still have the issue from TSB 58-18 and at least 5 other issues with transmission.

Is yours a 6cyl or 4cyl. This could be torque converter slip but it also surges. I am amazed that Kia is building better vehicles than Toyota

Doesn't S mode deactivate the lockup?

What scanner do you have? The calibration IDs changed on the 2018 V6s but I think it's the same ECM. Can you get live data if you manually ID it as a '16 or '17? Is there a bidirectional control for lockup?

If you can't get yours to work go for a ride with the service manager and a techstream hooked up.

S deactivates the AI transmission, IDK about lock up. Which is what the Service Manager said was my p roblem. It wasn't downshifting to 4th to handle the load because it learned that I drive conservatively. So I put it in S and it still does it. That's how I found out it was doing it in 5th gear most frequently. It will do it at several different points, but most frequently it's 40-45mph low rpms. I think 2100 or so. Unless I push the pedal almost to the floor it won't downshift and shakes instead. S, D, ECT. Doesn't matter. ECT changes where it does it but it still does it.

Plexus does the check engine light come on when it misfires?? I have held mine in the stutter for 30 seconds+ and the check engine light doesn't come one. I have little double that if it's a misfire, the check engine light would come on.

Rapeon...i mean snapon Solus ultra yeah I asked him and they said they cannot do that.

You feel it in lockup for sure but sill there unlocked. I drive conservatively too but i also feel the stutter 1600-2400 under load regardless of drive mode

$6 or “mode6” is the generic with the missfire generators
