Rear door panels turning green

Hey TW,

I need some help/advice. I’m coming up on my 36,000 mile warranty about to expire. I have a 16’ dbl cab off-road.

I noticed this past summer that the rear door panels started showing these bright green spots on them. They weren’t there when I bought the truck in January.

I took it to my local dealer and they didn’t even look at it before telling me no they won’t cover it.

After pestering a bit more I finally got the manager to review and he quickly said no, that it’s something I did and that they won’t cover it. His explenation was that the material does that if you flex it too much like taking off the door panel or something. (My thought was how much does the damn thing need to flex to get a spot that big? Also I’ve never removed the panels.)

A quick google search pulls up a Tundra forum where these spots do show up in small spots.

Anyone else have this issue or anything similar?

Is it worth my time to try and keep fighting this with Toyota?

Looks like it was sprayed with some kind of chemical and forgotten before being wiped down or the wrong chemicals being used. Did you ever take your truck to a car wash? It looks like looks like someone took goo gone to the plastic.

 

Don’t use Armorall products on these vehicles. Their products sucks
With all those chemicals they use and can cause issues similar to what you are experiencing.

I had the same thing happen with the green. Some types of suntan lotion will do this. You had passengers that were in the back and rubbed up against the doors. Getting a water. Armrest, etc. I had to really scrub to get that cleaned but I did it right away.

 

That was my second guess....not so much the sun tan, but some sort of body chemicals rubbing up against the panels. But I feel like this is what happened. Sun tan lotion and plastic, good call.

 

Wow that's funky!!! Looks like ghetto spray paint. Did those panels get detailed & by what product?

 

I haven’t cleaned the truck interior since I got it. Mainly because I was lazy but after I saw the green I didn’t want to do anything to make it worse that the dealer could blame on me.

Sun screen lotion could make sense but is it really that bad that it does this? Any responsibility on Toyota for design a product that greens so easy?

 

I use this stuff on all the black textured areas including my tonneau and it seems to work well.

 

Yes, sun tan lotion or sun block have alot of crazy chemicals in it. Some brands have actually had to keep changing formulas due to some toxic chemicals being manufactured in them. Toyota won't cover this, it's not a defect.

Good call I do the same thing. Maybe try some watered down dish soap & a rag to see if it lightens up first. Repeat that a couple times & then go to something else suggested. I wouldn't want to seal it in with a product so try that first.

 

My dad's '96 Impala SS had something like this happen. Try mean green. It was the only thing we found that would take care of it.

 

Nope and most of those sunscreen products say not to get them on anything.

 

My 16 tundra has a couple minor spots like that right off the lot. Dont notice it too much unless its in direct sunlight.
IMO. I feel like the plastic/colour mix from factory is not equal throughout the panels. Ill try and grab a pic.

I do agree with the sunscreen though. I found that it would immediately change the colour of the panels. Also ArmorAll is garbage.

Also I have never used any cleaning products. Just water and micro fiber.

 

I do want to say I did try taking a moist cloth to one of the spots to see if the green came up. I thought it was spray paint when I first saw it. Nothing came up from it though.

I’m not definitely saying it was sunscreen by the way, but I could see that as a possibilty. Taking family to the lake or something.

I’ll test a spot to see if anything clears it up, but in my mind I don’t think it’s a green color on top of black, so I doubt anything will restore it.

 

Hello My previous 2014 tundra did the same thing. it started on the rear drivers door and eventually spread to all the doors in some form or another. they all started at connection points on the opposite side of the panel (the connection post to the metal door). I brought it to the dealership the day i noticed it and they watched it happen to every door panel in my truck in a 4 month period. i never used any chemical to clean any part of it. eventually they sent some Toyota engineer guy out and he had all the door panels in my truck replaced saying something about the release agent used in the mold.

i would pop one panel off and see if the center of the green is right where an attachment spot is.

come to think of it the first spot I found was on the plastic that makes up the bottom of the seat where the controls were.

I have looked for pics but i can not find them. sorry.
