Finally a fix from Toyota for Stumble condition (TSB 0062-18)

I've just assumed they simply do the best they can with one single calibration (the "latest"). And then use that same calibration for anyone with any complaints, but change the wording on the TSB/ID# so it's specific to a particular issue. That way, they have a record/database of complaints.

They're not gonna simultaneously install different ECU calibrations for every issue that pops up, whether that be 3 different versions or 11 different versions. I guess i think of it more like computer operating systems. You can install windows. And it'll work flawlessly on 96 identical computers. But it'll be buggy on 4 computers. Figured it's the same with our trucks now days. And the TSB's are kinda like security patches on computers.

But that's just me speculating.

 

I had mine re flashed this past Saturday and the service writer told me they had one calibration that they downloaded from Toyota that reprogrammed the ECM. It covered it all.

 

1k miles on and it still shifts good, but also still has a harsh shift when giving it some gas after coming to a stop and also still clunks into 1st for me.

 

They flashed whatever software was for TSB0058-18 into mine on Friday morning. I think I feel a difference on the 40-50mph backroads to and from work...could be placebo effect.

Body shop mgr told me they found rust in all 4 sills lol.

I'm just speculating as well, so no worries. I just find it hard to believe that Toyota got one tsb to cover all the current issues. Especially when what it's supposed to correct isn't listed as a repair. Who knows though. I got the high altitude tsb and don't live at a high altitude, yet had the high altitude symptoms and problems...

I'm just wanting to drive the darn thing.

 

Been running the 04B04 since it was released. So maybe 4-5k miles or so.

It's not as good as day one, but no other complaints besides one that's getting more and more noticeable.

In the OVTune thread, they talk about a clunk when coming to a stop. I'm getting that more and more and it almost feels like I got rear ended lightly. Enough that my head hits the headrest. I can't always reproduce it on demand but it used to be rare and only when stopping quickly from a decent speed. Now it's happening on slow stops. I believe some have said it's due to the torque converter being locked and not unlocking in time. It did not do this before the TSB.

Otherwise everything else seems fine and roughly the same as when I had the TSB installed.

 

I got hassle. I was told by the SR that I would have to wait 4 hours for the tranny fluid to cool down before they could apply the update. That was followed by a "WTF? It is a software update, what does this have to do with fluid?"

 

So after about 5,000 kms my truck feels like it did before. Its now at 45,000 kms. Kind of a shame because it felt peppier and really
smoothed out the tranny coming in and out of OD with the cruise on. Now its back to lurching down on slightest grade or passing seagull.

Just have to live with it now...

 

They want to check your transmission fluid level. Has to cool down before they can check it.

 

Got my OBD2 scanner today and confirmed ECU Calibration ID is 8966304B0400 so while I didn't get a sticker stating they did the update it was updated to the most recent version folks have posted here for the 2016.

I see a market for a battery disconnect switch so you don't have to unbolt the cable. Unless it already exists.

Actually what am I thinking, I used to have one on my race car. Might think about installing one.

 

Went in today for TSB 0058-18 (TCI-5133) which afaik is the same calibration file/ID as the newer TSB 0062-18 (TCI-5143). Dealer was an hour away so I got to drive it around for a bit after on and off highway. Very happy to report it drives a lot better and responsive, shifting feels smoother and I feel like I don't have to step on it as hard to get it going. When I needed the power, passing on the highway was a breeze and it didn't do the aggressive downshift putting you in high revs like before. All in all very happy with the results and crazy to think I drove almost a year on stock tune. Now just waiting for OVTune 1.05 to see if it will blow this TSB away!

PS: The dealer did the free update no questions asked, they simply checked when the vehicle was produced and determined mine did not have the TSB since the TSB was released July 2018 and mine was still running old calibration ID. If your dealer is requiring to test drive the vehicle to replicate the issue and refuse to do the TSB if they cannot replicate the issue that is BS. I've had this issue so I've had to call around until I finally found a dealer who would accept my request hassle free, done in half hour with some drinks, snacks and a car wash.

That is great, but I wasn't there to get the fluid checked. It isn't part of the TSB. They use lines like that to get out of doing work.

That's interesting. I had my 5133 done last week and immediately felt better around town. Held gears better up to about 80kmh. Still not great on highways above 100 kmh. Wonder if AI is taking over and relearning for you? Try driving in S6 for a week or two and see what happens. I did that before my flash as apparently S6 doesn't learn and keeps same program in place. Just have to remember to go into S6 every time you drive.

 

What is "S6"?

 

Instead of drive, once in D pull it to the left and you will be in S. Default limits it to top out in 4th. Push up once and it will shift into 5th when up to speed. Once more and it will go into 6th. If you leave it like that it will go back to first when you stop and shift through the gears to 6th when you take off again. S6. Thing is, there is no learning in S so it should shift like that until another update is applied.
