My check engine light came on at exactly one year and one day after I bought the truck with 10,000 miles. I panicked and rushed it back to the dealer and they put the code machine on it and then just turned off the check engine light and told me to come back if it came on again. It came on again rather quickly so I went up the road and had AutoZone put the code machine on it and they said it was evaporative and to take it to Toyota because it's under warranty. AutoZone turn the check engine light off but then when it came on again I called Toyota and said this time when I make the two-hour round-trip I want you to fix it not just turn off the light and the man yelled at me and said he did not know what was wrong with it and then he yelled at me some more and said I would have to leave it for days so then I decided since I was being yelled at and since he was claiming he did not know what was wrong with it other than evaporative codes that I would watch it to see when it was coming on. It was coming on when it was less than a half a tank. I would fill it up and the next day it would go off. I also noticed it did not come on at all all summer. It came on last week when we had a sudden cold and I had a quarter of a tank of gas. So I called Toyota and they said for me to bring it in -and they fix something that was recalled blower motor I think- and put the code on it and said it was evaporative and then they said it was my fault because I had debris in the gas tank. They noticed that I had dirt in the truck bed because I had hauled mushroom compost because it's a truck and I bought it to use as a truck. I pointed out to them that up until a year ago I had only driven the truck back and forth to work and I had been using my Chevy S10 to haul firewood and mushroom compost. The man just stared at me and did not respond. Mostly I have used it only to drive up and down the road to work. But yes I have used it as a truck. I do not believe I have debris in the gas tank because I am not an idiot. But they refused to fix it and said I had to get the gas tank cleaned. I have not overfilled it. I have seen on other threads people saying this happens when the truck is overfilled. I put the pump in and when it clicks off I don't put any more in. In any case today when it was pretty warm and I had almost a full tank the check engine light came on so I took it to a different person and he put the code machine on and said it was evaporative and that Toyota was jerking me around and the valves are stuck off or stuck on. I have no idea what to do to get them to fix this. I can't imagine that I got debris in the gas tank when I wasn't even using it to haul anything but was using my Chevy S10. But I am also appalled that they are saying that a truck that is this expensive and this new cannot be used as a truck and can only be used to look pretty on the road I guess. Please someone please tell me what I can do to get this truck fixed under warranty. The codes are p2401 and p2402 and p2419

It’s under warranty, take it to another dealer and don’t say shit except “fix it”.

Grossomotto that is pretty much what the man I took it to today said. He said instead of taking it to Marion where I bought it that I should instead take it to Mount Vernon.

Yeah just take it to another dealer and all the stuff you wrote in the first post, don’t say any of that. Just say the CEL lights came on a you want them to fix it.

Wow. Start raising hell. The fact that they correlate having compost IN the bed contaminate the gas tank is idiotic. I would have made a scene right then and there. Such bullshit. Try calling corporate or go blast their social media. Im sorry that this is happening to you with what supposedly is the most dependable truck out there. Toyota is digging themselves a grave with these types of issues amd how they handle them.

How much gas do you normally put in the truck? Do you go beyond the first click of the nozzle and fill it 'to the brim?' The codes are related to the evap system which normally is pretty robust. Damage to the vacuum pump and lines can throw these codes.

Yeah something is very wrong with this. It shouldn't matter how much gas you put in the truck nor should it matter what the air temp is. I've filled mine all the way up, never an issue as long as the cap is properly tightened.

Incorrect. The evap system is designed to deal with vapors, not liquid. "Brimming" the tank will eventually cause an evap code, I'm pretty sure it says as much in the owners manual. You are correct about tightening the fuel cap though.

I think first and foremost a Toyota rep should NEVER yell at you unless he is prepared to eat a knuckle sandwich for lunch.

Second of all, the mushroom debris is total BS. It sounds like your dealer is a complete debacle. I know it’s hard to believe...

Third, it is under warranty. If you can’t make headway with a different dealer. Call corporate. They should help you get it sorted out. Also, when you speak to corporate mention specific advisors names and explain all of the issues and treatment you have dealt with and they should help. If not, then you at least have a case opened to fall back on.

Maybe it will set a code, it's never happened to me though. I think we can agree that the dealer's response to OP's situation is bullshit.

LOL, and BTW.. the fuel level doesn't stay high for very long with these trucks!

Agreed. The dealer is being shitty, and "because it's hard" is never an excuse. Service after the sale is what makes or breaks dealers.

Problem is that 1st dealer probably has bs written in online records history for truck that can be viewed.
    I vote for damaged sensor.

    Lots-o-stuff
So, initially it was only triggered with a half tank of gas, and cooler temps outside. Now it's happening when it's warmer outside and with a near full tank of gas. To me that points to a worsening mechanical failure, as your second mechanic said.

These problems can be a pain in the butt to track down. It could be as simple as a bad gas cap, as complicated as an evap. system failure, or anything in between.

I'm sure the first dealer just doesn't want to deal with it, which is BS. The "dirt in the tank" comment is just them talking down to a woman, and the guy should be fired for spewing that garbage. Tell him you want proof of the dirt in the tank. I'm sure he fished a camera down in there and has video proof.

Ohio girl, there are about 7 dealerships between McDaniels in Marion and Columbus. Just pick one. Byers is about 20 minutes south of Marion on 23 by Delaware. Hell, take it to Columbus if need be. It's warranty, just make an appointment and go. If they yell at you, just tell them you only will deal with them in writing.

Lt. Dangle, Marion illinois. i should have said that.

Arries289, i always take the pump out when it clicks off.

ShirtTucker, I think you are right about the talking down to a woman. Funny-not funny- this same week the lawn mower people said i had debris in my mower gas tank. I took it to a different guy who checked and said no but that the first people had put the choke rod on backwards when they cleaned the carb.

Thank you all. i think I am going to call corporate because of the real possibility of online bs for any dealer to read.

I just spoke to the Marion service manager again who this time said that there is dirt in between the bed and cab- compost probably- on the wires and that's the problem. And as I said to him that makes no sense because basically what he's saying is that you cannot take a Toyota off road, you can't take it mudding, you can't take it in the desert, and you cannot drive it through any kind of big body of water like a low level Creek or a big mud puddle because apparently the evaporative system is open to the outside environment. Does this sound like a problem that happens to Toyotas ? That if you get them dirty that they have this problem?

My chevy s10 was 16 years old and used a lot more than this tacoma and never had this problem.

He offfered to have me bring it back in but I said no that I would take it somewhere else
