Hey there. My name is Aaron. I actually work at Toyota and was the design engineer for 2016-2018 brake system. These days I'm a driveability evaluation engineer doing what I can to make these trucks drive as nicely as possible.

I've been driving a 2017 Quicksand TRD Sport 6M/T for the last two years and have finally started modifying it as I plan to buy it out at the end of my company lease term. Looking forward to keeping this truck for many years!

    Thanks for the compliments, guys!
It boils down to the platform we were working with (mass distribution) and having to package brakes for a 4xxxlb vehicle in a 16" wheel while still meeting our targets for brake fade, squeal, dust, ETC. Drum brakes, as you may know, have a much higher effectiveness than disc brakes. The difference, is of course heat dissipation and fade performance, but this isn't a concern in a vehicle with most of its weight over the front axle.

I was curious myself and calculated it out. If we put an existing rotor/caliper package on the rear axle (say, from the 4Runner), we would lose enough vehicle-combined brake effectiveness to necessitate a 17" brake package up front. Not so coincidentally, the 4Runner has a 17" front brake package (meaning the brakes fit under a 17" wheel, NOT that the disc is a 17" disc).

Now in the aftermarket you could look into a more aggressive front pad, but it would most definitely cause excessive dust and at least occasional brake squeal. You would also want to upgrade your brake fluid to raise the fade temperature.

    Very interesting information.

If this is the case, why did fzj80 land cruisers have 4 wheel disc with 16 inch wheels? I believe those suv's weigh 4700 lbs. Is it the weight distribution? Really curious

    Btw: welcome!!!
