SR DCSB 4x4 vs. TRD OR DCLB 4x4

    Hi All,

    I have been lurking for a long time and I think it is about time to replace my old ’96 Toyota T-100 with a new Tacoma and I could use your advise. I am torn between the SR (not SR5) DCSB 4x4 and TRD OR DCLB 4x4.

    A little about me:
    • Very frugal (hence the SR) and I don’t need a lot of frills so I wouldn’t get the technology/premium packages
    • Planning on having a family soon so I am only looking at double cabs
    • I do use my trucks regularly as work trucks, primarily construction, so I heavily prefer a long bed (the one foot of difference does help when you are putting in 8 foot long 2x4s) although I live in a city (Seattle) and do drive downtown regularly as well so a short bed might be better for parking
    • No plans on offroading, but I am an avid skiier and love powder so I prefer 4wd, but I have never used lockers and wouldn’t know where to start
    • Prefer black paint and black interior
    • Prefer automatic (wife can’t drive stick and refuses to learn)
    • First new car and plan on daily driving the truck for at least the next 10 years

    SR (Not SR5) DCSB 4x4
    Pros
    • Costs: $31,895 (roughly $5k cheaper than TRD)
    • Includes more technology than I need (power windows and mirrors, key fob, backup camera)
    • Satisfies my needs and more
    Cons
    • SR doesn’t come in a long bed
    • No sweet OR wheels
    • Gray interior (although I could get sweet black Clazzio seat covers)


    TRD OR DCLB 4x4
    Pros
    • Dream truck to a certain degree
    • Long bed, which I can use for dump runs and hauling around construction materials
    • Black interior
    • Cool wheels
    • Extra, although unnecessary, frills (power rear window, push button start, crawl control, bed outlet)
    Cons
    • Costs: $36,925 (roughly $5k more than the SR)

    My main issue is whether the TRD OR is really worth $5k more. It seems hard to justify the price difference when I could put used OR wheels, Clazzio seat covers, and use bed extenders when hauling a lot to make the SR pretty nice and comparable to the TRD. However, this is my first new car and I plan on driving it for a long time so buying my dream truck is enticing.

    The decision has been a struggle so please give me your honest advice. Thanks!

    I would say get an SR5 with a long bed, a short bed is almost useless

    I have an OR. But if the SR had been available in a DC with a manual, I’d have gotten that without hesitation.

    For you, I would decide between the SR and SR5. Get the SR5 if you need a long bed. If not, SR. I love my short bed. Just enough utility for all I do (bike, ski, fish, camp). You won’t need a locker for any of what you’ll be doing.

    I bought a low mileage used 2016 TRD OR so that I could stay within budget. 19k on it and love it

    I was in the same boat and went ahead and got an offroad. I love it, but I wanted a short bed myself. If it really doesn't matter with all the fancy stuff, just get an sr5. Just not sure how much difference there is between that and a offroad.

    A DCLB SR5 with 4wd costs $35,040 ($3k more than the SR and $2k less than the TRD OR). The SR5 does not appear to really be much different than the SR so I don't know what the price justification is (are you paying $3k for just an extra foot of bed space and a slightly larger radio/control screen?). At that point, I figured I would just pony up the extra $2k and get the TRD OR with the extra bells and whistles (e.g., sliding rear window, push button start, crawl control, nicer wheels, wireless phone charger), which the SR5 does not include. I just don't see the value in an SR5, so I ruled it out.

    You could always get the the SR or SR5 and get some TRDOR take off wheels. People replace wheels and sell em all the time, check the marketplace. Black clazzios would check the box for your interior preference.

    That was my thoughts as well, but then I am also paying money to make my SR be like a TRD OR and I could just get the TRD OR with it already the way I want (albiet for slightly more money). I guess I should have made a poll. I just want reassurance in whatever decision I make since this is my first new car and it is a lot of money for me. I just want to make the right decision for the long term.

    We've owned a DCSB for 6 years. I would never consider a SB if it were our only truck and even my wife is ready to sell her 06 DCSB after a rainy, sleepless night of both of us trying to sleep in the bed together this past summer. We'll be selling the DCSB soon and have already replaced it with a newer DCLB.

    I'm a handyman and use my truck as a truck. A short bed would never due for my intentions, especially if I was already used to the size and utility of a T100.

    Get a used low mileage trd or and you will be paying around 30-32k for your dream truck.

    I would prefer a 3rd gen and since they are so new prices are not great. I am not sure if Seattle/Washington are unusual, but the prices listed at dealerships for a 2016 or 2017 Tacoma are almost the same price as new ones (sometimes they are listed as more expensive!). It seemed like a bad idea buying used here since the Tacoma does not seem to depreciate much in value.

    I have an Sr 4x4 no complaints on shortbed. extra space would have been handy sometimes but I made due. I would have like the cluster in the OR though. I get tired of calculating my own mpg by had every time. if I were to do it over again i would get an offroad just so I could have a manual again and a locker.
    but in all reality the Sr package has been good for me.

    I am in Seattle area as well... you are correct on used pricing
    Its most of the time better to buy new... unless your going for something older
    Honestly for a 10 year plan on owning spend the extra $5k or even $10k to get what you want

    SR5 for $35k? You can do better than that.

    Either case, if you truly are a cheap skat....eh, frugal, then you should definitely go SR. I use my bed quite a bit loading up bikes and skis. Sure, a long-bed would be more useful, but 90% of the mileage, the bed is empty. And the short-bed fits everything I need to.

    You don't need a poll. If you need a bunch of strangers to validate one of your biggest purchases to-date, you've got bigger problems.

    Just pick one. You will be fine either way.

    I went with a sr v6 dcsb 4x4 in 2016 for 29,000.... that was with alloy wheels the dark satin. Has everything I need and would repurchase if I had to definitely no buyers remorse. sr in my opinion looks better with color matched bumpers then the chrome sr5 bumbpers

    Make sure you sit in them both. For me, the SR/SR5 package seats felt unsupportive and cheaply made, enough so that I sucked it up and paid the extra $$ for a TRD. I only weigh 165, and I could feel the metal structure of the seat pan through the foam on the SR seats.

    Are they really different seats? I dont remember a difference when I tried, but probably only sat in the sr5 for all of ten minutes before moving up a trim. All in all though if I had to go back I might consider an sr5 w/ upgraded entune if there was a good enough deal on it

    I thought about the SR5 but then realized I would not be really happy with it and still have spent 30-32k. I went with the TRD Offroad DCLB and got it for just under 34k before TTL. Adding clazzios and wheels to the SR5 means you are already over 1k into upgrading it.

    Why not just get a no frills TRD OR? Mine was 32K so it's the same price as your SR example. No way i'd pay close to that for a SR. Only frills I have are towing, mudflaps and chrome exhaust tip.
