Best place to cut open firewall.

Trying to wire a few light bars through the firewall into the cab. Learned that I have to actually cut open the firewall to fit the wires through. Where is the best place to cut it open without damaging the other wires while keeping it secure and what tool should i use since I’m cutting but it’s also a narrow fit?

 

Wait!!! Why do u need to cut? There is a perfectly good useable rubber grommet that you slice the tit off of and can run your wires through. It is right below the brake booster on your offroad, right next to where all the other wires run into the cab.

 

No cutting.

Two rubber boots/grommets already there. One is on the driver's side just above the left of the steering column.

 

Unless the wires are the diameter of a garden hose, you should be able to put them through one of the existing grommets.

 

How many wires and how big are the wires? I put a slit in the grommet were the factory wiring goes through the fire wall near were previously noted and rtv'ed around it. My bundle of wire was 1/2" round.

 

Where to cut the firewall? Not where you would want the fire to come through, for sure!

Great suggestions above - all my wires go through existing grommets too.

 

Can’t believe anybody would cut a very expensive firewall to install some cheap LEDs.

Cheap meaning significantly less cost than a $35k truck.

 

Not sure what cheap LEDs you guys are running, sounds like OP has 8/0 awg cable like he should be running for those tanning lamps. /s

Passed lights and VHF radio gear through the grommet beside the existing harnesses..

 

My bundle is probably around 1/2” as well. Do you think it’ll fit?

 

Don't ask her how it feels until after you shove your 1/2" through her grommet.

 

Pl 259 fit fine and it's 18mm (.71in);

 

I've got two 4 AWG and an 8 AWG going thru that grommet, just lube it up and shove like you mean it.

 

See if the connector can be put on later

 

Soldering pl connectors is a HAM black art, i'm not quite at that level..

 

Its a worse job now that our neighborhood RS closed and I have to order those parts online, you all did it ordering Ejunk from FleaBay and Damnazon!

 

That was like the first thing I did when I got my license was run a cable into my basement and solder it up. It's really not hard I promise you can do it!

 

Which one is the grommet I should cut the top of to open?
