Why not jack some 2nd gen steering controls? Like 2014-2014 model controls.

Could just depin/Repin the steering control harness if the buttons still don't correspond correctly.

I can't imagine the steering assembly stuff has changed between gens given controls look exactly same with some positional/labeling changes.

I like it because the volume scrolls across the screen from left to right as you adjust it "up and down".

While I agree with your thoughts, left and right does mirror the control bar that pops up on the display when you adjust the volume. I prefer up, volume up though.

The steering wheel controls aren't the only things that are backwards. For some reason my Tacoma and my 4Runner wiper interval adjustments are backwards. The 4Runner wiper frequency decreases when you roll the adjustment knob upwards. The Tacoma frequency increases with the same adjustment.

It's not something that I've ever openly complained about but it does boggle my mind. Wouldn't it be easier, cheaper, and more convenient to carry over the same functionality across all models? Why change it around?

I'll bet the answer is "target audience." Manufacturers all do studies on these kinds of things - even on crap like the number of cupholders in the vehicle. They then try to make their vehicles appeal to the largest audience and most likely buyers. Some study probably indicated that Tacoma owners prefer it one way, and 4Runner owners prefer it the other way. Sure to be a pain in the ass if you have both.

Not to derail too much the convo... But why in the world would anybody need 10 cupholders in a D-Cab Tacoma???

I knew something was off with the Intermitent Wipersfreqyency knob thingy... Good to know I wasn't losing my mind!!!

I’m so glad I’m not the only one that feels this way about the controls.. I’m wanting to flip it so the volume is up and down and just switch or repin the wires behind for the foreward and back buttons.. I can manage the volume pic is sidewards

IT IS very intuitive and well designed but I am too tired to explain.
Just check your volume bar on the display (L to R) and station order display (UP and DOWN).
The button the the wheel follows the same order. GENIUS!

If it was that intuitive, there wouldn't be the questions about why it is that way. It may be logical based on what you said, but I do not think intuitive is the right word. (and I am saying this at a time when it would probably frustrate me to switch back now that I have grown accustomed to it).

I don’t know why they do this. My 2016 Sienna. Would it have been so hard to just square these off and use the same layout? It’s not like the interiors are different generations, this Sienna interior came out in 2015. F6BB3D77-0C8B-4DED-ADBF-C78903EC44F7.jpg

Except most people use that button to skip tracks, not change radio stations...well maybe my mother would, but I haven’t listened to the radio in a car in at least 10 years.

Just traded in my 2014 last week on a 2018. I’ve called my wife 4 times already when I thought I was turning the radio volume up. It’s gonna take a while to get the hang of the 2018 steering wheel controls.

Holy cow, somebody else willing to admit confusion.... my wife’s a Bimmer girl and for the life of me, I can’t figure out why BMW insists on putting two separate heating controls in the car. Not the dual climate controls.... but that damn dial in the center of the dash. The one thats not connected to the OTHER temperature controls. The one that goes from cold to hot in about 1/4 turn. It can be hot while the others are cold.

Now is a good time to delete the GF number from the phone. Don't want to "I thought I was turning the radio volume up" with wife in the truck next to you...:frusty:

Has anyone taken apart the steering wheel controls and rotated the the volume control assembly so that the volume is up and down? I understand that it matches the display,I’d rather have it the other way.
