Has anyone cleaned their AC Coil?

I turn the a/c on high cool and shoot 2 blasts 5 seconds long directly in the fan under the cabin filter. Let it circulate through your a/c for a minute or 2 then shut the a/c off and with the fan on high shoot 2 more 5 second blasts directly in the fan under the cabin filter. Let it circulate for a minute or 2. All done... I do this in the spring and fall. You may have to treat it again after about a week. I have to do mine 2 different times.

One good thing about winter here in Illinois....you get away from the stank in the a/c because you don't run it.

 

lucky for me i only run the AC occasionally even in Summer, so the stank issues haven't affected any of my last few vehicles.

 

I've been wanting to look into this as well. There is a product (foaming) you can shoot up into the condensate drain, plug the drain, let it sit a while, then drain it out. Not sure if anyone here has tried that or just how effective it is?

Just got back from 10 days in the AZ dirt and dust, and the new truck smells like the old one as soon as the AC kicks on.....dusty AZ road smell. New car smell all but gone.

The Gen1 never recovered from that smell. And was the same. Hardly noticeable (if at all) until you switch on the AC. Then it's about enough to drive you out of the truck. I need to find a relatively easy fix I can perform when coming back from trips so I don't have to put up with the smell on a daily driver. Really unfortunate there wasn't some way to easily get to the evap coil.

 

I could not get the clear tube past the firewall thru the drain tube. No go for me.

 

Has anyone else noticed that Toyota offers two different cabin air filters for this truck? The first one is the standard filter, but the second is called "deodorant filter". I wonder if that might help.

I figure it is about the same thing as these Fram's I have been using. Hey if you buy one of the Toyota name brand cabin filters (deodorant)... let us know what you think about it. I'm getting closer to getting rid of my truck for this very reason.

 

I'm considering it. Oddly enough, the deodorant filter ($21) is cheaper than the standard filter ($25).

 

Yeah and the standard filter is cheaply made. Went for my last free oil change/service a couple weeks ago and they changed my cabin filter. Glad I told him to keep my 6 month old Fram.

 

I thought so too where I am, but when you turn on the defroster it runs the AC compressor. Watch your drain tube it'll be dripping like mad.

I have to set mine on outside air most days when I get to the truck.

 

yeah i watch that too, cus i keep vehicles till they fall apart, so a little planning keeps much of the funk out.

You mean the "evap core?" That I can tell you the dash needs to be removed.

If you get a squirt bottle and fill it with rubbing alcohol and spray into the air intake I bet that would help with the stank. And would cost $2 at most if you already have an empty spray bottle

 

Just remember to remove the cabin filter first.
