I got my new Tacoma this last March.
Now winter is comin soon here in Canada,so i am shopping for a remote starter.
I asked my Dealer if they do have Toyota OME for it,those that they don t have to pass wires etc,,he told me last week that it was comin only here in next April,so i told him Ok,i ll think about it.Yesterday they called me that indeed it is available staring today, instead of after the winter.
I asked him,so how much? Humm 865.00 plus taxes, that is Canadian money, but still, this will be over 900 bucks,no way.I would have preferred dealing with my dealer ,but not at that price.
I had a quotation done at antother place where they have been in that business of remotes, radios, etc, etc for over 30 years, and it was like 500 dollars, that does include two remotes, and use of your Phone,or other phone that you can add the app.
But yes it is not the dealer s OME but i have had aome in all my other vehicles before and they worked well.
    Regards
    Charly

They sell a plug and play kit, $249.00 No wire splicing. There is a video with instructions right on the website. It took me about 30 mins to install mine. There is an add on cell phone module as well.

I'd love a remote start. But I have a M/T and I dont want to risk my truck taking off without me in the event that I forget to leave it in neutral

Is there not a solution from 12 Volt with a neutral interlock? I think there is a signal they can tap into because the cruise disconnects briefly when I change gears. Or maybe it is looking at a microswitch on the clutch.

I agree with OP on the price he got, you can pretty much install a natural gas heater in your garage for that kind of money.

I have had several MT vehicles in the past with remote start, (I will be doing the remote start on my manual Taco as well) I had safety switches rigged on each of them so if the car was left in gear the remote start was disabled. It is a relatively easy mod to do and then you can have the best of both worlds!

I have a remote start on my MT, and it won't start if you leave it in gear. There's a switch that detects if it's in neutral or not.

Interesting. So their notes say it turns off as soon as you open the door? Sounds a little annoying. Wonder why they had to program it like that. I assume it's for a reason.

Toyota is the only manufacturer who has this setup I think... seems like kind of a stupid feature to me. (Edit seems like a few other manufacturers have it as well.)

I want to know more about this safety switch? What car starter brand was it? Every manual remote start I've seen requires a procedure so that your on the outside of the vehicle while it's running then you turn it off with the remote.

I worked at a Car Audio place and we used Viper or Alpine alarm systems with remote start, I also had a Clifford alarm with remote start all on Manual Transmission vehicles. I honestly don't recall what switch we used but I know they were all wired so if the car was in gear it wouldn't start.
