34' tire on a 3rd Gen Tacoma?

Hi everyone,

Inspired by a dude's Tacoma build which had 34' tires on the original TRD Sport wheels (17') on a 3/1 inch lift with 1.25 wheel spacers I went ahead and bought 285/75/17 All-Terrain tires for my truck before deciding which lift to go with, which up until now seems like a very stupid decision. As I did my research for the lift kit and called many off-road parts stores and talked to many "experts" it almost seems as if they get upset I got such a big tire, and that A LOT of cutting will have to be done and that the 3 inch lift will definitely not be enough, has anyone here put 34' tires on a 3rd gen? if so with what setup? PLEASE HELP! btw, I don't plan on doing any hardcore off-roading, it'll be on the freeways most of the time (unfortunately) and I preferably I would like to spend less than $800 on the lift kit alone, thanks!

 

Firstly, you will have to cut and mend some. It is necessary to do an aggressive CMC (cab mount chop) and hammer the pinch weld on the cab side of the wheel well flat. A heat gun and gloves can move most of the plastic out of the way. Cutting the plastic on the cab side of the fender is best. A new alignment with maxed out caster is also needed. If you buy after market upper control arms you will be able to push caster even farther forward.

You should NOT buy a lift in that price range. Minimum go Bilstein 6112's, UCA of your choice, and add a leaf in the rear. Even if your not off road, don't get spacers or anything above 3" lift.

You can clear enough on STOCK suspension if you work hard enough. I ran 285/75/16s with no rub on stock suspension for a long time.

You opened a can of worms buying those 34’s. Lots of
Plenty of builds on TW with 35” tires. You should have no problem finding inspiration.

 

I'll stick with my pizza cutting 33's. No cutting.

 

34” tire is basically a 285/75/17 tire. I know a guy running this tire on his 3rd gen and all is needed is a body mount chop. He has aftermarket front and rear bumpers. So if you are stock bumpers you will have to most like move the front fender liner forward.

I will be running this size on my 2015 second gen.

I ran 285s with the OME suspension for 2 years with very minimal rubbing, and I like to think I wheel pretty hard. I've only just recently did a cab mount chop and pinch weld smash because I'm graduating to 35's...

Thought I remembered you running 34" tires....

 

Not sure exactly what you want a picture of, so here's a few

 

285 75 16 is a 32.8 or so
285 75 17 is close to 34 so an extra inch. Not the same size.

 

I think I saw a post or two about tire sizes when I was using the search feature last week.... at this point every tire size question possible has been asked and answered several times it seems.

 

Ive got 285/75/17 on my trd sport. They are on ray10's though and not the stock sport wheels. The wheel offset will play a big role in how much you will have to cut, hammer and what not. I have cut lots of the plastic, hammered the pinch weld, and gotten an alignment with over 5 degrees of caster. I had a CMC done initially, but am going this weekend to get it done much more aggressively. Should be good to go at this point. Im on ADS 2.5" coilovers with clickers along with Camburg UCA's. Id recommend those Camburgs due to how much adjustment they allow.

You are going to want to find an alignment shop that knows what about lifted trucks with aftermarket parts. I found one with guys who go out on the same trails i do and so they did a fantastic job getting me all lined up.

 

Man good info. Would you say Im gonna be alright? I just ordered some 285/75/17's for my tacoma. I had a stage Fox 4A mid travel kit put on my truck by accutune and am waiting for a cab mount chop/hammer pinch while I wait for my wheels. Then I just got a bad feeling that I needed to think more through as most people put a 33". I just wanted something a little more but not 35's as I heard too much cutting would need to be done. I think I'm alright as everything is adjustable...

 

you’ll be fine. Get a good alignment by a shop that knows what they’re doing and you may have to also cut a bit forward of the wheel (all plastic) then good to go. 285/75/17 is the best size

If you have to lift your truck so the tires fit then they DONT fit! In order to make those tires fit full bump, lock to lock there is a ton of cutting involved. Unfortunately most people on this forum don’t understand this and just lift their trucks to clear bigger tires so they look cool on the gram

 

If I can make it work on a 2nd gen you should be fine as Sohail said it’s more about the wheel specs. I had to flatten pinch weld, trim about 10lbs of plastic, very aggressive cmc and my caster is at 3.7. I don’t rub at all now just at full lock/compression which is extremely rare.
