It's also important to remember that at least for handguns, "unloaded" means that any ammo in the vehicle has to be in a separate locked container and that neither of that one nor the locked container with the gun in it (the trunk of a car qualifies, but that's not applicable for trucks) can contain any loaded or unloaded magazines. At least that's how I've seen it explained on DoJ hosted web pages.

I think it's legal for there to be mags in the case with the gun provided the gun has a lock making it inoperable, such as a cable lock through the action of an automatic or possibly a trigger lock.

Don't really see the point in keeping a gun locked in your truck. When you need it you will not get to it. Holstered on your belt. Get your cc license.

I'm not a lawyer, but I could swear I've seen it laid out that way somewhere. Might have been calguns rather than the state DOJ, or I might be remembering it all wrong.

People need to join AR15.com and go to the Home Town Forums, where your applicable gun laws will be explained to you by the resident boffins.

I have seen some chatter on calguns that although the letter of the law is that a loaded mag not in the well is not a "loaded weapon", the cops in some areas (such as L.A.) will still try to jam people up sometimes over having a loaded mag in the car with an unloaded pistol.

I pretty much only ever have guns in the truck when I'm heading to/from the range, and don't try to have them remotely accessible during transit (usually put the range bag in the bed for the drive unless I'm stopping along the way), so for me having the ammo locked separately is just a matter of putting a luggage lock on the box (holes are too small to fit anything bigger, and not enough material to drill them out) and a padlock on the case. Since I'm not carrying for defense, the risk of getting hassled (and possibly going through a trial that it'd cost to win) isn't worth skipping an unnecessary 10 seconds of extra precaution.

In California, you cannot carry a loaded mag in the passenger compartment with a firearm. You can have the firearm in the cab but any ammo must not be accessible by anyone in the passenger compartment. If you don't have a CCW the firearm must be in pain view.

Wrong. You guys need to stop with this false bullshit. Back your claims up with PC, or state your comments as simply being what you do, and not as a legality.

Yeah, a lot of people in Hawaii think the same thing, but no where in the law under transporting does it say anything like that. But people keep repeating what they have heard.

BTW, I got one of these for transporting
Nobody is gonna break into your truck to steal a first aid kit. I think there is a hardcase version and jumper cable pouch too.

Not wrong. I suggest you read up on 12025, 12026 and 12031 PC.

Nobody has been able to cite a specific PC with subsection to corroborate the false information in this thread.

The following link is directly from the CA AG. The only requirement is that the unloaded pistol is in locked container or trunk. A loaded magazine next to an unloaded pistol (no round in chamber) does not constitute a loaded handgun.

Well I'm not going to continue to argue with you. Your linked post is exactly what I stated. Keep doing what you're doing and when you get stopped with your unloaded handgun in the passenger compartment with ammo next to it, let us know how that turned out for you.

What I am doing is irrelevant to what is on one side or the other of the law. I simply think it is a disservice to pass on false information in such a matter-of-fact way. I have been stopped doing what I have described, and I am still here.

Below is what I linked to and what you said. There are no special requirements for ammunition or magazines. Nothing about the gun being in plain view. Nothing about accessibility.

A gun being loaded and not in open sight qualifies as concealed carry.
