When I get a garage building I’m gonna open it up for mods. But have woods we could do a mods and trail day come spring time.

You, my builder,me, my brother etc...

My wife designed the house and has a background in architectural design and other related work. She is all about depth and layers etc... she doesn’t want a flat house. So it is for the look. Once we get some siding and windows in I’ll know how I feel about. Everything else she has done has come out well in my opinion so we will see.

We have super gravely stuff where we are building and it scoops out like butter. I didn’t have much to do with the choice to be honest. Is there a big difference with the two?

Gotcha. I was just curious, because the little incut in picture 3 seemed like it didn't serve any sort of purpose except to cut out some living space and use more material. Seemed like an odd choice (I used to work building construction), but the wife's background explains it all, lol.

That's good, then. It means it's well-drained, so you don't have the risk of those piers heaving. We have some pretty heavy clay soil in my area and whoever set the piers under my addition didn't do a good job of drainage around them. A couple of winters ago when we had really cold weather with no snow we had a deep enough frost that it heaved my addition by about an inch. Broke a pair of windows, so the next spring I had to go in and hand dig around them to lay some gravel and a french drain. It was a huge pain in the butt to do it, but we haven't had any heaving problems since then. :notsure:

As to the difference between them, spiral or helical columns/piers are basically an auger that they dig into the ground and leave in place. They're the same concept as those auger-style tie-downs that you get with the instant garages, just scaled up.

Edit- Here, I found you a picture.

The biggest thing, they use a machine to screw the piling in, and it can be built on, as soon as they move the machine.
    No waiting.
    No excavation.
For my deck, its a small 8x20, and will use 4 posts, as well as double ledger.
$220/ea installed, with 6x6 plates, for deck/roof load.

Been off the grid for a while. Vacation to Vermont last week, catching up on work this week. Hit the 'reset button' (mark all forums read) when I got back here so I missed anything exciting that happened while I was away.

On a personal note, we got hitched while we were on vacation. There's a new Mrs. Carleton in my house and it's pretty f'n awesome. The wedding was as small as it could possibly be, the two of us, our friend who married us and a photographer. I'll share some pictures when we get them.

It looked like there was interest in another FluidFilm day before I left and I know @Unchained 5150 has been letting people know too, so I'll start another thread soon.

Yeah we (builder and I) constantly need to bring my wife back from the clouds as far as how much things are going to cost, and he hates architects because they always add little useless things...like this space. Hopefully it looks nice in the end!

Thanks for the explanation on the pilings, the picture helped a lot too.

Ours is 9x20 or maybe 10x20 so about the same size. Not sure how much ours were yet, but that sounds like a pretty good price including install for yours.

    COngratulations!!

My old boss used to hate architects too. We had an archway over a door that an architect owner wanted us to do, not a straight edge on the entire thing, and he wanted it done in wood. My boss had to explain to him how time-consuming steam-bending that much wood would be, and translate it into how much extra it would cost, before the guy realized that he wanted us to make an archway that would cost roughly as much as his car

What are the specs on these? Get them clearcoated before you install them.. Mine didn't last one season before being completely corroded over. Also the ext resie line couplers rusted over and look horrible now.

It’s called design intent. They don’t think about how something will be made. They just want what they doodle on a napkin to be built. As long as there is time and money though, anything can be built.

I find that when people ask me why I did something the way I did, I use the same tone when either responding " the engineer made me do it " or " the Mrs made me do it ". Coincidence?
