First of all, please forgive me for creating a new thread on this topic, I've searched and searched, but I haven't been able to find the information I've been looking for on the TW forum. There are two main things that I hope to accomplish in this thread:

    1. Create a place for Canadian owners to discuss the frame corrosion/replacement issue without muddying the waters with our American friends. The American settlement is bound to influence the Canadian outcome, but it has no weight up here until our own settlement occurs.

    2. Provide links to real, verifiable information as to what out legal standing is and what Toyota Canada's obligations are.

I suppose that I'd like to add a third element as well - I'd like members in Canada to share their experiences. What dealers are easy to work with? What are the timelines from diagnosis to fixed truck. Is the dealer providing them with a loaner car? Truck? I'm in Calgary, so I'm particularly interested in how the dealers that are local to me a approaching this.

I'm currently getting my information from toyotaframesettlement.CA, I have not seen this site linked on TW, if it's here, I'm sorry I missed it. One of the notable things that I've taken away from this site is that the Canadian settlement has not actually been approved yet. It is set to occur in Montreal on Sept 5th and Ottawa on Sept 7th, 2018. Much like the American settlement, this has come about as a result of a class action lawsuit.

You'll find that many of your questions can be answered here - http://www.toyotaframesettlement.ca...on-and-replacement-protocol-english-final.pdf

If that doesn't answer your basic questions you may find it here (section 7 is the interesting one) - http://www.toyotaframesettlement.ca/assets/settlement_agreement_(eng)_executed.pdf

TLDR Version (summarized from section 7 in the settlement document) -

    1. A frame inspection and replacement program will be created. CRC if no holes, new frame if hole is bigger then 10mm. 75000 Vehicles are subject to the agreement.
    2. The provisions of the agreement are in effect for 12 years from the in service date OR 13 months past the notice date. (one year starting 30 days after you receive notice)
    3. Toyota will provide a loaner vehicle for up to 7 days. (this is different then what the US members are getting)
    4. You can receive the CRC treatment up to 2 years past the notice date.
    5. 'Toyota shall replace the frames and associated parts, as required, on the subject vehicles that satisfy the rust perforation standard...'
    6. Toyota may implement this program early to expedite relief to the class.
    7. The benefit is transferable to subsequent owners (Good!)
    8. If you disagree with the dealer's assessment you may take your truck to a second dealer. (Nice!)

There's more (obviously), but it certainly answered a lot of my questions.

I should mention that this covers Tacomas 2005-2010, Tundras (20017-2008), and Sequoias (2005-2008). I *think* I saw it refer to Canadian registered trucks, so if you imported yours from the US you should be included on this as well.

This means that it should cover everyone going back to 2005, since you still have just over a year from when you receive notice about this settlement. The timer is just starting.....

    Cheers

Thanks for creating this thread. I am waiting to hear back from the dealer just to have the frame inspected. Apparently, there is a wait list since a lot of owners received the letter recently.

That's good to know. I haven't actually received the notice myself yet. I was just crawling around under the truck a few weeks ago and didn't like what I saw, that's what got me searching for (good) information.

It was coated with the CRC about two years ago, I bought it a year ago with the understanding that it was inspected and treated. It looked good at the time, but like most, the CRC has just flaked off to expose a lot of ugliness.

Bought a 2006 Taco Last week, and I took it to Toyota in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia today for the frame inspection. They found 2 holes in the frame, and approved it for replacement. Was told that they will replace the frame, lower control arms, leaf springs, and brake lines. The lady working the desk said that I will have to pay about $250CAD for "fluids". Parts will take about 6 weeks to come in, and when they do, she said I will be given a loaner (didn't specify what the loaner would be)

It sounds like your dealer is easy to work with. Who brought the frame topic up? You or them?

charlesglen and country hills I've had the absolute worst experiences at. the corrosion comp did fuck all so I had to fight with them to either replace it or redo it. like pulling teeth with the general managers.

I did. Just went in a few days ago and asked about it. They checked my VIN and made the inspection appointment for today. Took about an hour for them to do the inspection. Been easy so far, but will question them about the cost for the fluids when I go back.

That's good to know. I've mostly dealt with Heninger and South Pointe, but I've never had anything challenging done by them. Mostly just oil changes when it's too damn cold to do it myself. I've had so many bad experiences with other shops in Calgary that I tend to do most of my own work.

That's good to hear. Hopefully your swap goes off without a hitch.

Does anyone know if Toyota will be offering a buy back instead of frame replacement?

Thanks for the info. I have a 2008 Tacoma that was imported from the USA, I hope that the truck is covered by this class action.

In section I. of this document :http://www.toyotaframesettlement.ca...on-and-replacement-protocol-english-final.pdf they refer to '...vehicles registered in Canada...'. So I'd be optimistic that you'll be covered.

I haven't seen anything about a Gen 2 buyback anywhere, Canada or USA. There was a buyback of Gen 1's but that doesn't help Gen 2 owners. It would be nice if it was an option, I actually had my truck up for sale when it failed the inspection. I'd planned on selling it for about $15k and now Toyota wants to spend....$15k to fix it, it's a little silly. I would be pissed off if I was desperate to sell it, now that I know the frame is rotten I can't sell it with a clear conscience without disclosing the frame condition, which would obviously reduce it's value. So if I want to sell it, I have to wait several months for the parts to become available. To complicate things I use it for work in the winter months, so I'll need to postpone the new frame until after winter breakup (late February to mid-March). I'd hoped to have a new truck this season, but that's out of the question now.

I had the frame on my '07 replaced two months ago by Scarborough Toyota. They replaced the lower control arms as well. Took only 2 days.

The work will only take my dealership a few days, the delay is in waiting for the parts and the 15 trucks in front of mine to get done first. There may be a window to get my frame done sooner, but it seems like a terrible idea to immediately take that truck into the bush without shaking it down around town for a week or two first. My work sites are 800+kms from home and several hundred kms to the nearest Toyota dealer. If it became undrivable I'd have to remove it from site at my own expense, and it will be expensive when I'm 80kms down a winter ice road or on the air weapons range where only a few contractors have the ability to even enter the site. A co-worker spent ~$1200 just to get his Dodge to the closest dealer last winter.

I'm in the Toronto area currently and am looking to get my frame assessed and hopefully replaced. It's rusty rusty, I haven't had a chance to check for actual holes yet.

Can anyone recommend dealers that are more open to doing the replacement? Any dealers to avoid?

Somewhere I read something about Milton being good, and a poster above seemed to get good service at Scarborough Toyota.

Did you have to pay for the lower control arms?

I bought my Tacoma in Ottawa, then imported it to the states - I live in Northern New York just a few miles from the border. Since the truck was built for the Canadian market, Toyota US and Toyota Canada both said I needed to take it to a Canadian dealer for the frame inspection. I took it over to the Brockville Toyota dealer a week and a half ago for the inspection. Called them today and they said Toyota had approved the frame replacement. They figured between 6-12 months for the frame to come in, then four days to do the work. I'm pretty pleased to be getting the frame as I was afraid being a Yankee would somehow screw things up. Thanks Toyota!

@SpeedyJ it sounds like your frame replacement ended up getting approved? I’m in a similar situation where the frame has already been coated by the dealer but I’ve since found a big hole. I never got a letter from Toyota though... weird I have an 08.

I bought my truck 3rd hand @300k, it had the undercoating done to it and was already peeling. I had three inspections since then and the last one failed the inspection. They said they ordered me a new frame about two weeks ago, no eta on the frame. Dealer said that they get notices 30days and 7days before they take delivery. Dealer said it would be 3 weeks or 3 months. They also said they wouldn’t replace my shocks which sometimes happens. I’ll probably get some 5100s to replace the original shocks.

Yup, I got approved in September, they found a small hole in one of the cab mounts. The failed inspection was at the end of September, the new frame was installed at the end of February. Overall I’m pretty happy, but other faults were uncovered once the body was off - bad head gasket, bad steering rack and a few other things. That combined with some preventive maintenance - brake flex lines, power steering lines, body mounts, upper co troll arms, etc, ended up running about $4k. I’m obviously not super happy about spending the money, but overall it’s a much nicer truck now, so I’d say it’s all good.

I bought mine 2nd hand from Montreal but ended up taking mine in to an Ottawa dealer (I live in Gatineau). It had already received the CRC coating before I bought it so when I took it into the dealer, they tried to deny my frame.

After a bit of persistence, they looked it over and approved the frame. They only had my truck for 2 days.
