If your hitting bump stops on an empty bed there is a problem with your leaf springs.

Ive towed far more than that amount of weight for 400 miles up a 10%, two 8% and 2 7% grades and at no point did the engine struggle. My old tow vehicle had a 6 liter, it would have been easier with that for sure.

I have sumos so I didn't have that issue either, but I do believe you about riding on the bumpstops.

The engine had to struggle unless it had a 5.7 under the hood

No. It likes to spin, but it never struggled. Struggled to me means foot to the floor doing 35 mph on the highway. It definitely hit third and lived there a good deal of the time, but that's kind of to be expected when towing and climbing.

I'm not sure what some people are expecting.

To get that result you would have to be pulling 8k. I tow around 5k and maintain 65mph in 5th gear (manual) with rpms around 2300. On occasion if there is no headwind I can go to 6th. Hills require 4th to maintain speed. The only time I see 4k rpm is going up the steep hills in the mountain. My truck isn't struggling.

it was obviously loaded wrong if the suspension was bottoming out or he springs are trash. especially if it really bottoms out unloaded like you say.. you driving the thing off cliffs or something? define the engine struggled.. were the RPM's just up or couldn't it make it up the hill? i know i can tow my 5500 pound loaded trailer up and down "hills" and never have a problem with power to get up the hills.. RPM are up at 4500 rpm but i can pick up speed going up hill...

Not on an engine where peak torque is at 4600 RPM and peak hp is 6000. This isn't a sbc from the 80's with a 4500 RPM redline.

I don't think doing 65 up a 10% grade at 4500 RPM is struggling to keep up. While pulling a trailer.

Again, struggling would be not able to keep up. With it floored.

i agree.. i've done decent hills going across PA and to and from maine and have never had any issues geting up any of them , sure it revs but i can also pick up speed going up. i'd be concerned if i had it floored and was losing speed. i can pick up speed going up puling 5500 pounds. i usually tow between 60-75mph on flats and hills.. prefer to keep it between 65-70.

Struggling as in gas pedal to the floor and not gaining speed or gaining speed so slowly it wasn't noticable.

My bump stops routinely hit with an empty bed. I dont know what else to tell you.....its not just me, it's a common thing around here.

I wound up adding Firestone bags which solved that problem

    so whats this trailer weight?

if suspension is bottoming out with an empty bed and that trailer isn't like 8,000 pounds plus the 800 of the bike then you have a serious problem with that truck.. think it may need to go in for some serious repairs.
