Question about cracks

On the way to Galveston, this past weekend, a damn rock hit my windshield. didn't notice anything at the time, but several hours later a crack had started from the edge of the pasenger side. It's grown about an inch each days since then and is about 6 or 7 inches long now.

Will a glass repair place be able to stop this from spreading any more, or is it too far gone? I really don't want to have to drop $300 on a new windshiled for a truck that's barely 3 months old.

 

check with your state laws for insurance...

in some states as long as your have full coverage insurance...you don't have to pay any deductible with no increase to your premium rates...and the insurance just replaced your windshield no questions asked...

other states require you to pay deductible...

My last window replacement on my Tacoma cost me $175 installed. Might want to shop around for that window.

 

I've had 3 windshields because of rocks....chips can be repaired, but unfortunately cracks cannot. like said above, give your insurance a call and see what their policies are. some will doo windshields for free, some will use a deductable, and in some cases it's cheaper to pay out of pocket (if you have a huge deductable). in my case, the $200 deductable was cheaper than the full cost, and my coverage didn't have the free windshield replacement like some policies/states do.

 

Safelight can usually repair cracks up to 6" long, but if it's longer than that you're probably out of luck at this point.

 

I just checked a couple of places, here in town, and they say that they can repair as long as 12 - 14 inches as long as it's not in the field of vision.

 

i think in addition to the size of the crack, depth is an issue too. one of mine you could feel the crack with your fingernail from the inside, while the others were much shallower, and i'm assuming more likely repairable.

 

In Texas, you still pay the deductible for the windshield.

 

Call your insurance company. In most cases, it'll be covered under your insurance.

 

in Texas, insurance will cover a crack repair, without a deductable. But for a whole windshield the deductable would apply. The windshield costs less than my deductable, so that would be pointless.

 

If the ding small tham a quarter you do not need to hae replace.

something big than quarter can be fix.

Crack or bigger then quarter is a replace time.

Good luck with the crack repair. It won't help this time, but for future cracks you can pick up Fix a Windshield at Wal Mart for about $10. All you need is a shady place to do the repair...a gas station works fine... and about 20 minutes. Each package will repair about 3-4 cracks and it is very east to use.

 

And things vary by insurance carrier too. State Farm in CA used to cover the crack repair for free. Now they don't. And it's cheaper for me (but not them) to just replace the whole windshield because I only have a $100 comprehensive deductible and a reputable glass shop will split your deductible with you. Out of pocket was only $50...about as cheap as having a crack filled.

 

I had this happen recently only it was at the bottom of the windshield. I got a big chip, a crack went down from it to bottom of windshield and was going up from there a couple of inches. I used the auto parts chip repair to take care of the chip and then went to a windshield repair place and had them drill the end of the crack and fill it like a chip so it would spread no further. Cost 20.00. DO NOT LET WINDSHIELD REPAIR PLACE USE YOUR INSURANCE or it'll show as a claim just like if you had an accident...even if you have glass coverage. The crack has gone no further in the past month since it happened.

Got the crack fixed a couple of days ago. It was about 8 inches long by then. It's still visible but not as noticeable. The guy gauranteed that it will not grow.

I went through 3 windshields on my old Tacoma. Thankfully NY is zero deductible and full glass coverage. Rocks on the Thruway hate me.

 

Holy thread revival! .. anyway, State Farm replaced mine for free on my former vehicle.
It was a chip in the driver's side, and they gave me the choice: repair or replace .. both with no financial repercussions ..
