OVTune does a little more than what you describe. I pulled this boat over a mountain and back with around 2000lbs total weight and the power to weight ratio felt and drove immensely better than before. Plus I avg 15 mpg which is better than the Tundra.

The OVTune is pretty darn good when it comes to DD. The power with all my armor weight, lift, tires, etc overtook a V6 charger from a standstill uphill.

I’m not sure that’s true. I think people understand it well, just don’t like the choice Toyota made with this engine/trans combo. People hate change, and are comfortable with torque heavy motors in a lot of trucks out there. There is no doubt that a torquey motor that hits peak lower in the rpm band would provide a better experience for most given the trans/gearing choices Toyota made. And then there’s the trade off..since you gotta wind this thing out to get anything out of it, your mpg suffers greatly. It is not a “traditionally” engineered vehicle, and some people don’t like it. I personally don’t mind it, but definitely see how it’s possible to dislike it. Reminds me of my ‘87 250r.

I bet it’s hard to piss in the wind when your wife makes you sit down to pee. If liking the truck I paid $35k for makes me a fanboy then so be it.

My 6.7L Super Duty that makes 925 lb-ft of torque doesn't hunt for gears!

All kidding aside, our Tacoma took some getting used to, but you do have to LEARN how to drive these things. And it does fantastic off road. What more could you want?

My goal is to drive very smoothly at all times. I hate jerking around. The faster an engine runs, the more sensitive it is to throttle inputs. This makes it harder to drive smooth. Beyond that, for the most part, I am a fairly slow driver and most of the time I'm not really going past a quarter throttle. So all that power being up high is useless to me.

I'm an engineer too, and a mistake a lot of us make is misunderstanding the difference between meeting specs and making something good. It's a big problem in a society obsessed with numbers and measurability.

Besides all that, the stock programming of the truck is awful. I remember having to modulate the throttle just to keep steady acceleration. I remember great big surges of power randomly. And every time I thought I had "figured it out"; it relearned what I was doing and would change again. Frankly it's a hot mess and anyone who thinks it drives fine stock in an unsubtle cretin.

The Toyota Corporate office asked me to tell you guys to keep those suggestions coming. They were too busy to write their own post.

Agree with the too many post about this subject but the MOD should just PM the person the existing links in the forum and remove it. This forum is getting huge. In general TW doesn;t get enough props.

Makes me sad. We're essentially in an abusive relationship. We take the abuse and defend the abuser.
That said, I'd buy this truck still.

    I don’t think it’s the engine. It’s the transmission.

And another thing for you guys with larger tires. Larger spinning mass makes you lose power too.
I'd love to have access to performance parts also, Heads, cams, larger throttle body, Turbo kits, etc. TRD would make a killing selling upgraded parts.
Like Dinan with BMW.. A real racing division for it's customers.
Step up Toyota! Take our $$$

Unfortunately this has been my experience as well. I had the latest TSB applied and the truck drove pretty damn good for about a month; then the "learning" took over and it drives like crap again. If Toyota would just apply some reasonable "shift smarts" like they appeared to in the last ECU update and turned off the "learning" feature, I think the engine/tranny would be a pretty good combo.
