Difficult to say honestly. Either way I swapped out the stock gas cap for a locking one. Regardless of this guy was looking for, he was able to gain access to my vehicle and remove an item effortlessly. The only thing I don't understand is why didn't he go after any thing else. I had a few desirable items in my center console which were left untouched. Honestly if it wasn't for the fact that the console lid was open, I would have gone weeks unaware that anything even happened.

I recently started using the "NextDoor" app, and it seems all the discussions there are about cars getting broken into, usually by people forgetting to lock their cars. There's even a long thread where every day or so, someone will post a surveillance camera picture of the same guy checking for unlocked car doors between 1 and 4 in the morning.

Do your cameras send you an alert when they start recording motion?

I don't think that's true necessarily. There is a check valve at the bottom of the filler tube to prevent the gas from running out if you roll. Sometimes it's not hard to push a tube past it sometimes it's difficult. The check valve itself isn't very strong otherwise the fill would overflow, so your success will depend on how the valve is designed and if a small tube can sneak through it.

I wonder how many of those, "forgot to lock" just assumed because they see no sign of entry. Could be the same thing as the op

Because manual keyed cars have never been broken into or stolen...

This does work. Before I knew you could turn off the key fob, I wrapped mine in foil (for the issue OP had). I can’t unlock the doors or start it when fob is in foil.

If it's the same guy around the same time why not call the cops or forward his picture to them. Seems like he's making himself pretty easy to catch him in the act.

Yea but there is always a delay. Also there tends to be a lot of false positives... especially at night. The system I have will alert for light reflecting off the vehicle as motion, trees swaying, or vehicles passing by. These consumer priced systems are nice to have but in my experience are more of a passive monitoring system or confirmation of occurrence more so than a real time security alert system. I have a nest security system.

well, we watch too much TV. in the real world, cops don't work like they do on TV. They won't do anything unless a life is in danger or you are a celebrity. Even if the robbery is in progress, they probably won't even come if you call. I know people have passed on the picture and asked for police assistance, and part of the discussion is, they don't see a police when you need them but they are there to catch you speed or turn on a red light. at least its a good sign I have not read about anyone dumb enough to personally confront this guy. not worth the risk imho.

Then enlighten me. In a thread about a break in, why are manual keys better?

If - as speculated - the fobs can be "amplified" and utilized against the owner for a silent breakin, then the manual key is better. No risk of that.

Also it's awesome putting an actual key in the ignition and turning it. :D

My nephew's Honda Civic will take any old key, house key, Toyota key doesn't matter. Just put it in and start it up. Our local police department gives free "The Club" to anyone with certain older keyed vehicles. I think the new ones are better however.

When this attack against the fobs started a few years ago I installed aftermarket alarms in all my keyless entry vehicles. The key is to NOT wire it into the oem keyless module. Otherwise it will just be disabled when they hack the fob. I carry the alarm fob in the center console and only use it in high risk areas.

My truck was "stolen" not too long ago. As best I can tell, due to my own stupidity. In my case, I think I may have dropped my keys at the front door or maybe even left them in the lock. Woke up in the morning, walked out to the driveway, scratched my head for a few minutes (because it was surprisingly empty!). Called the cops, filed a police report, etc.

In the end, it turns out that someone took it from my driveway in the middle of the night, drove it to the bottom of the street, then maybe thought the better of it... Got out and left it in the middle of the street. Neighbor called the cops, had it impounded. Cost me a couple hundred to get it out, but it was in perfect condition. Not a scratch, nothing missing or moved. Best money I ever spent.

I had my tailgate rekeyed and had the missing key fob deactivated (and called a locksmith to change all my home locks).

The remote can be put in battery save mode, temporarily, by holding the lock button on the fob and pressing the unlock button twice. The manual says, "
When battery-saving mode is set, battery depletion is minimized by stopping the electronic key from receiving radio waves." Cancel battery saving mode by pressing any button on the fob. This would stop communication between the vehicle and fob, and hopefully stop someone from unlocking the truck by amplifying your fob signal. It also forces you to use the fob to open the truck, as the "grab the handle to unlock" feature requires the fob to communicate with the truck.

The smart key system can be completely disabled by the dealer, or you if you have the software (techstream? and I think there is one other one).
