Wandering if anyone has any info on adding CarPlay to their entune system or if it’s even possible. I’ve got an 18 Tacoma with the entune premium system. Thanks.

Well, there’s that, but I’m not dissatisfied enough with the OEM head unit to justify replacing it? Have you done that and if so which head unit are you using and do you have any regrets?

CarPlay would be nice but I don’t think it’s possible to add it with our 18 Tacoma’s entune. But I’ll be watching this thread for a solution if someone has found one.

I think the best we can hope for is a software update down the road that includes CarPlay.

As time goes on the original head units will look so antiquated you will want to rid of it. It's almost that way now. Much better options to be had from aftermarket.
4200nex here. Love it. Waze, Google maps, movies, appradio, engine info, front cam, etc etc etc, etc. Newest I would go with 4400nex.

As of now, the only toyota models that will have CarPlay is the 2019 Toyota Avalon. That's what all the article on the internet state.

Yeah, I figure I will upgrade it one day. I’ve upgraded stereo components in almost every vehicle I’ve ever owned and I actually enjoy doing it. For now though, the OEM radio fits the bill. Thanks, everyone, for the info.

I just went through this exact situation. You have to replace the headunit.

I bought the Kenwood Excelon DDX 9905S. It offers both Android Auto and Carplay. I am not sure about Carplay but Android Auto is wireless allowing you to use android auto without taking your phone out of your pocket which is awesome for short trips. I also got the idatalink maestro which I thought was a waste of money and wouldn't buy again. It doesn't really offer anything on our cars.

Despite liking the wireless, I am not sure I would buy it again just for the wireless feature. I would probably go with a Sony headunit which was less than half the cost. The Sony doesn't have the wireless and no maestro (which again, I find pointless and helped lower the cost) but does have a better built in amp. In addition, the Sony is the only aftermarket headunit (that I am aware of and did a decent amount of research) that has a volume knob and forward/back radio channel selection. I played with it in the showroom and the knob didn't feel chintzy - it felt solid.

In terms of sound quality, I did notice a substantial improvement replacing the headunit alone.

They actually announced the new RAV4 and Corolla hatch are going to have it as well. Seems to me like Toyota is adding it via Entune 3.0 to new/refreshed models so I wouldn't expect it to be in the Tacoma until it's mid-gen facelift after the Tundra and 4Runner get their new platforms.
