Ok. What the hell caused this crack? Cutting edge on a small backhoe bucket.
Beveled both sides. Clamped a backer to it for alignment and gas containment. Did the root pass on one side then flipped it and did the other. One fill pass on this side and the crack happened. 150ish amps with Er70s-2

is it a bolt on cutting edge of maybe AR-70?

Different cooling rates between the cutting edge and the filler metal as the back side cooled it pulled the front causing the crack

how much of a gap did you have ??

much easier to tell in person

Do you get your gas from a big brand name place like air gas or something? I go to local spot in my area “Gardena welding supply” and they’re more competitively priced. Try finding a more mom and pop shop. A lot of the times they don’t price gouge you. Same with where I get my steel from. Used to go to a big name place cuz they were convenient and had a huge inventory and all that but found a place with much better prices, same quality of materials, and they deliver when I spend over $300 (usually next day too)

I use air gas. A while back I got quoted a stupid high price for gas. I told them, sorry, I have to fire you guys and go elsewhere.

They told me to hold on a minute and let's see what we can do about the cost.

They came up with a number that was half what I got quoted earlier. I seriously think they toss darts to see what someone will pay.

In short, just ask if they can be more competitive.

Weld on cutting edge. Didn't seem hard enough to be anything other than mild steel. I left about and 1/8" gap for the root. Didn't want any voids just in case the operator wanted to go full ham with the outside tooth again.
Definitely not a good bucket design. The splayed outside teeth put the one hole really close to the cutting edge, not to mention that there is at least a 3/8" gap where the teeth could have been put farther onto the bucket.

I don't. I'd think it's a small business It's called california tool and welding supply. I get my co2 for my tires there as well.

Time vs Money. If it takes you awhile to go get gas it’s probablu not worth it for a few extra bucks in savings

Well all I gotta say is that is expensive what you’re paying

Agree on the throwing darts thing haha. Always ask. The worst thing they can say is no lol. If they do, THEN you go somewhere else

For those of you that have done Cab Mount Chops, I’m doing one for a guy next week and want to use my new plasma set up to do the cutting. Any concerns I should be aware of? I know the bushing can catch fire with continual welding but what about plasma cutting? If not, I’ll resort to my grinder but that’s no fun anymore.

The thing with AirGas and Praxair is they have crazy list prices walk in customers just about always pay list price on everything.

When I see what some people pay for gas and hard goods it is down right scary

Then since Air Gas went to the new computer system a few years back which everyone hates changing prices takes an act of the Gods

If you don`t ask and don`t have an account your going to pay list price

Look any cutting as long as your shop does not have interesting things the sparks can ignite you should be fine.

Like any cutting be aware were the sparks are going fuel lines and tank brake lines grease build up from the years

The people at work are for ever starting fires testing plasma machines
