I think 2015 Gen 2 was the last year for the actual PreRunner.

I was in the same pickle last weekend. Ended up going 2wd. Cause I wouldn’t want to break my daily on a trail. Rather save up & get an fj80 for actual 4wd stuff

If you're not offroading then you should be fine. You have better MPG and payload plus towing capacity in 2WD aswell.

You may not use your 4WD all the time, I don't - I live in a city and my truck is a daily driver 95% of the time. But...that other 5%. Having this truck is a 4x4 has inspired me to take some of those roads / trails less traveled. Ventured to places I've never gone before and I've even been in a position to help pull folks out in snow and whatnot. Some will argue you can do a ton in a 2WD truck (and they are correct) so I'm not downplaying a 2WD capabilities but there is a sense of comfort in knowing you can take care of yourself in most conditions....

If you live where there is snow or ice part of the year you can make it in 2 wheel drive. Just make sure the rear is at least lsd. You have studded tires and or chains. A couple hundred pounds of ballast over the rear axle. you don't have to go around corners. start on a slick upslope........Forget it. Get the 4x4 relax and lose the I'm going to get stuck on dog spit worry.

If you have 4x4, according to manual your supposed to exercise it 10 miles per month to keep the system lubricated and to get all the moving parts moving. So if you only offroad 3x a year on dirt roads then I would stay with 2WD. Buying the 4x4 and not using it could run you into some future issues with problems engaging. Next thing you know your spending a shit ton of money to fix a system you don't ever use.

I know its been said a hundred times in this thread but don't listen to anyone trying to talk you in to either side.
People trying to talk you out of a 4x4 because SOME people have mall crawlers is probably the dumbest argument ever.
People trying to talk you out of a 4x4 because you are gonna be building a dedicated trail rig is the second dumbest.

Buy what you want and build it how you want. I live in SoCal, land of the mall crawler, and that didn't do a thing to sway me from getting my 4x4. I play off road once or twice a month and the other 98% of the time I daily drive my truck. In my opinion, 4x4 is just another level of safety and security to add to your vehicle. If you don't plan to trail run your rig then you can always have that 4L switch for emergencies. And who knows, maybe knowing your vehicle is capable will make you want to get out there and play more often.

Whatever you decide to do, youll still enjoy your truck. Cheers.

If you live in a snowy area 4x4 is nice especially when you want to go out when no one else can. Judging by the other posts though you might live in CA or something where you don't really need to look out for that. Just make sure you enjoy whatever it is you buy!

My previous trucks were 4X2’s and suited me just fine but I always “wished” I had gotten the 4X4 even though I couldn’t really justify it. It’s not that I really need it but as the saying goes, better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Finally got one!540EB72C-C698-4283-BF7F-952BFC5957C8.jpg (33 years later)... no regrets here!

I’m seriously thinking about the 2 or 3 times a year we get snow. I can get up there AFTER the snow has stopped falling or put chains on it ( not!). But a million other ppl will be up there too or playing in dirty snow at a turn out half way down the mountain like me. OR I can for once enjoy the snow while it’s following and drive by everyone the CHP is turning around for lack of chains. Then like another poster said I that will encourage me one weekend a month to go out even in 4 high and drive the Necessary 10 miles to keep lubed up. I just need to hurry up and get a down payment to upgrade to a new 4x4 before I get too many miles. I’m at 12k ALREADY!

Oh my. It depends on so many things. For starters, do you absolutely love the idea of/associate 4x4 with trucks? If 4x4 and truck go hand in hand for you, than you may not want to buy 2wd, you may regret it.

Also, where you live plays a huge factor. Myself, for example, have spent a ton of time in the Southwest. Building pre runners was lots of fun, and I NEVER needed 4wd. All of the class 7 builds I saw were 2wd, at the time. There really was no point in the weight and breakable components of a 4wd.

Fast forward to now, my 2wd will bust sweet 360s in a half inch of snow, since I relocated to the northeast. It absolutely needed to retire, as I didn’t want to rust up my pristine frame, and it was too light on its toes to get any real traction, so I did what I thought I would never do... I bought a 4x4. Having spent two winters with a 4x tacoma, I don’t think I’ll ever be without one, it’s officially a must-have for me.

My brother has had his tacoma for over 10 years, he's always wished he had 4x4. More confidence in going where you want to go or need to be. More stability when needed, better resale value. I would argue that the minimal maintenance over the life of the system is little to none in comparison with needing it and not having it. But that being said. I wouldn't trade in my truck for it. The next truck you get buy a 4x4.
