I’m not an expert on this, but I don’t think a steel bumper necessarily “decreases” the amount or force required to bend our frames in an impact. (Make bending the frame more likely)

If you get hit hard enough to bend the frame, the stock bumper wasn’t going to somehow prevent it by absorbing more of the impact than the steel bumper would have.

I will concede, a stock bumper is softer and more likely to crumple than a plate bumper is, sure, but we’re talking about a moderate to severe impact here. The stock bumper would absorb some force but the rest of the force has to keep going, right?

I’m just talking out of my ass here, I haven’t looked at any tests or research.

The front bumper might be a little different because to install a steel bumper, most have to remove the aluminum crush bar. And you’ve got airbag sensors and all that Jazz.

Car accidents produce a lot of force.

I’m lucky I’m not dead after my last one and any luck I had I probably used up.

Always would rather have my truck damaged than me.

Surgeries and PT are also expensive even of you do recover.

 

I was leaning towards steel and i was talking my body shop guy, who does amazing work and who i trust very much, and he basically talked me out of it. His big point was that our stock bumpers are designed to crumple to absorb some of the force. My thinking is sort of the old vs new car argument. Old cars being solid metal don't absorb damage the same way as a car made of plastic with crumple points. Sure the car my take less damage you ware gonna feel and wreck in a solid steel car way more.

A roll over at 80mph. I was in the back with no seat belt on. Only time in my life I ever decided to take it off because I was laying across the back seat. So really I was lucky I took the belt off (they aren’t meant to be worn around your abdomen laying down). But in the future I’ll always sit upright with my belt on.

I was smacked around pretty good and luckily only needed a rotator cuff repair which I’ve got back to about 90%.

Subaru curtain airbags probably saved my life or at least saved me from severe disability.

 

My mom is a nurse practitioner so i got to hear a story about a car with all 5 seats filled and everyone but the person in the middle of the backseat had there seat belts on. They got in a wreck and the person in the back flew out of the seat and broke the necks of the most off the other passengers by flying into them. I make in everyone in my truck wear their seat belt for that reason. (on top of not wanting to get pulled over)

 

When I knew the car was going to flip, that was my only thought was I hope to not hit those around me.

I used to work in a hospital and now work in personal injury law. I’ve seen/heard just about everything.
I never drive around with windows rolled down. It is incredibly dangerous. It changes the airflow in the cab. I’ve seen a 16 year old girl wheeled in the ER dead on arrival. Her brain was litterally sucked out of her skull from the impact. Her drivers window was open when she was T boned doing 65.
People lose arms from hanging them out the window.

Even the smallest accidents result in serious injuries. Gotta be greatful for everything you have.

I want to get rid of the chrome, I’m not a fan. I would also like to get somthing more solid. Going to be getting this one very soon. Although Not sure if I’m going to get it with or without the tire mount.

 

Tire mount is awesome if you want to run a full size spare larger than 265/70/17 or 265/75/16.

I would probably omit the gas can holder there though. I mean since were talkin rear end accidents lol

No just kidding I backed up to a wrecked car at the shop. I did actually consider lining it black a few times but I really would like to get somthing more sturdy and versatile. Also highlift jack lifting locations

Exactly, before anyone says it yes ik I was just talking about a bumper not a whole car but the principal is the same. I'm not trying to sound like scotty Kilmer but our trucks from the factor are designed VERY safe and aftermarket isn't always best. Just something to think about before you jump on the armor trend
