My experience with ford is u will spend more time in the shop repairing stuff than actually driving it and your value will be worth as much as a Hyundai sonata

I have this engine in my minivan, lol. It’s the only thing I really like about it, that midrange is so sweet. I test drove both manual and auto Tacoma’s and the auto drove just like my van but with a nicer sounding exhaust.

If I ever can afford a 3rd gen the 1rst thing I'll do is swap out the crappy 3.5 V6 and install a smog legal LT4 with a ported 2.9 Whipple supercharger

LS motors are outdated and so yesterday !!!

    My post was misunderstood.
My point is I am a mechanical engineer and understand horsepower and torque as much as the next guy, and I have built, tuned and raced a wide variety of vehicles with a wide variety of power characteristics. It's not about the peak HP or torque numbers - it's the area under the curve. This engine has a very unique power curve, especially for a truck.

As for my comment regarding the fuel mileage at 75mph - of course a vehicle's fuel economy will be less at 75 than 60. I have driven a lot of vehicles long distances at 75mph. This truck's fuel economy drops more than just about any of them at those speeds which surprised me - especially coming from the 4.0L. The 3.5L is supposed to have replaced the 4.0L for improved fuel economy and smoothness.

Have you run the 3.5L Tacoma in 5th gear (S5) with ECT for any significant distance? Sixth gear is pretty much worthless.

You should know as an engineer that one data point (yours) is worthless, especially since 25K of these are sold every month.

I guess you need to read this thread: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/software-update-for-the-manual.562550/page-108#post-18942114. There are over 110 pages of people who agree with me.
Bottom line is that a modern engine with fuel injection and variable valve timing shouldn't stutter, have flat spots or be peaky. Again, it's not enough for me to sell my truck, but it is annoying. Toyota could do better.

You had probability/statistics right? Just sayin'.
99% of the people who buy these trucks are not enthusiasts. The trucks run just fine for them.

I didn't take the OP as slighting OVTune.

While I agree with the OP, I don't think the truck is perfect. There are some driveability issues that I feel is a result of less than perfect tuning on Toyota's part. I have had two instances when pulling out into traffic, where the truck would hardly accelerate even with the pedal subsequently pushed to the floor. It should respond better.

I like my truck and would buy again, but it ain't perfect.

Yes, I am well versed in statistics, as well am a certified Black Belt in Six Sigma. Please state your source for your claim that "99% of the people who buy these trucks are not enthusiasts".
You still don't get the point - I said I would buy the truck again, as would many of us in the aforementioned thread, but that doesn't mean we don't think it could be improved.
This dyno chart tells the story, if they ran the test correctly. There is a huge torque dip early in the rpm range, as well as from 2800-3800rpms, which is where I would expect many of us drive most of the time. The link to the dyno run is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MB53tdsOhos

Dude. Let it go. Your dyno run tells simply A story, not THE story.
As far as a "claim" look at the number of people posting on 3rd gen enthusiast's sites and compare it to sales figures.
Do me a favor.... YOU come up with an informative article that helps others to understand the performance of their truck and start a thread on it. Bad, good or indifferent but make sure it's factual because so far, all your posts are full of opinion and conjecture. Those are not two endearing qualities of an engineer.

I understand why you posted this, but you can't attempt to stifle dissent in a TW thread. It's not in any way part of the CoC, and won't ever happen.

LOL, it would be easier to herd cats or push rope!

Sorry to crash the thread. You are obviously full of truths and facts with your data. How silly of me not to have concluded that the entire population of Tacoma V6 enthusiasts are posting here and that dyno plots were conjecture and opinion, not data. I will turn in my Engineer card.

Arguing with an Engineer is a lot like mud wrestling a pig - after a few hours you realize he enjoys it :argue:

Agreed, as I didn't take it as slighting OVtune either. The point I was trying to make was this - If you're going to make a statement about OVtune or any other product as FACT, well you should maybe have some first hand knowledge of said product. I also said if OP had put a simple IMO in there somewhere, well that would be fine. At least others reading his post would then know he's stating an opinion (albeit an educated one), and not a hard fact.

I'll leave it with this - there is plenty of detailed information in the OVtune Alpha thread as to what Mat has done and how complicated the ECU software is. One need only do a search and filter by Mat's posts to see that. I don't think anyone, after doing this, would continue to say "OV Tune has a thing that will change the shift points and changes the power around a bit".
