The Moto has a good one that doesn't require root. I don't think anyone has one for the Dinc yet that doesn't require root.

    Couple questions for you gurus...

    1) what does it mean and how do you "root" your droid, or in my case droid eris

    2) how do you disable your regular messages program so that you only have to deal with the handcent?

Its in the options to disable the stock messaging notifications. Root means to gain super user access to the underlying OS. Then there are a lot of other parts of hacking the system that allow you to do more and more, but on a basic level root is just super user access.

How to root your phone is different for every phone. Some have evolved to one click applications, some are newer and require some advanced skills to do. check www.androidforums.com under the all things root section and under your specific phones section.

Sort of, You can change tons of stuff, remove preinstalled apps, install wifi tethering, take screen shots, install custom recovery, install custom roms, do full system backups... there's a tons more you can do.

Void your warranty if you can't default it in the case of a damaged phone. I don't think Verizon really checks it though.

    1. If you mess up, you will brick your phone.

    2. Android 2.2 is Froyo and will be officially released soon. Well, except the Nexus One, I think it has already been released for NO.

    3. Froyo is the build name for the latest build of Android OS. I believe Gingerbread is next.

They have made rooting for the moto droid so easy now, I wouldnt worry. Then you have a custom recovery console loaded. Then with a good nandroid back up your phone is virtually unbrickable. Just follow directions and do go fooling around with things you dont know about and you will be fine. Then the sky is the limit....I'm sure there are already 2.2 roms for the moto.

Did you get the moto or the Incredible? The incredible is much much more difficult to root right now and they have not released the recovery console. If you're familiar with Linux at all then you should have no problems doing it. See my tutorial on androidforums.com
