I have a 2018 2.7L AUTO, access cab, 4x4 that I want to throw a camper shell on.

Do you think I’ll notice much power loss or any weight issues?

Any of you guys running a cap/camper shell on your 2.7 auto trans 4x4? Pics would be appreciated.

I’m wondering if would notice any power loss at all, or any sag in the rear of my truck.

    Thanks!!

I just put one on my ac cab, found just what I wanted used. I cant seeing hurting mileage much, anyway who cares about mpg if the truck makes you money and you are happy with it. My wifes new 4runner gets about "I don't care" mpg, she's happy believe you, me I'm happy. If I wanted to save money I would quit drinking whiskey......lol...nah!

unless its an aluminum cap, it will effect power and mpgs due to the weight of fiberglass

I have a MT truck. Yes to all your questions.

Any additional weight or change in aero, immediately notice a difference, being a 4 banger. Heavier 10 ply tires, even stock size, mpg hit. Armor, mpg hit. Topper, mpg hit. Lift, mpg hit.

Doing the above to any vehicle will always change something. Not just Tacomas.

2.7? You already lost the power when you signed on the dotted line! Edit: sucker :)

Meh, mine weighs barely 200lbs, if not 30lbs less than 200. I'd imagine an aluminum cap would be close to that weight.

Yeah I’m not worried about gas mileage at all, just like I said I’m worried about it slowing me down or feeling weighed down

That’s good to hear. How about noise? Mine has the composite bed I wonder if that helps at all with noise or makes it worse? Might have to throw a bed mat down

i have a 2017 3.5 but you're not going to see a difference, you increase your aerodynamics, adding a little weight will be negligible in the grand scheme of it all

My experience - started at 23-34 mpg. Added the fiberglass shell, couldn't measure a difference in mpg. Took off the air dam, lost 1-2 mpg. Added the rack, RTT, and awning, lost another 1-2 mpg. Now getting ~20 mpg, pretty consistently. I don't feel like I lost a ton of power with the shell added, and getting the extra weight over the rear wheels has been nice during the winter months.

I immediately took off my air dam cause I thought it looked funny so I’m not sure what I was getting before. I’m really surprised you lost that much just by removing it. Wonder if I’ll gain a few mpg if I put it back on lol

As ugly as it looks, it definitely provides a measurable mpg boost, sadly. 1-2 mpg seems to be the consensus from the folks that measured before and after. I took mine off on a 4wd road (rather than rip it off on an upcoming obstacle), and have had it off ever since. If I can get un-lazy I might put it back on for the winter. Probably a good thing to do during my next oil change.

    Boo no keep it off.
Jk, I’m considering doing the same next change. This question is a little off the beaten path here, but what interval are you using? Did you stick with the 10k? Something inside me just cringed when I was told 10k intervals by the dealer. I’ve been doing 5k

I've seen enough folks post good results from oil tests that I'm not worried about it. I stick with 10k. Didn't see anything worrying come out when I started doing my own at 30k, and haven't had a reason to worry since then. Certainly looks a hell of a lot better than the straight dino juice out of my old '98 outback. On that note, use a decent synthetic, there's a reason everyone's recommending it these days.

I use whatever the dealership is putting in it (maintenance plan until 45k). Do you have a recommendation? I’m sure if I provided my own oil they’d use that when they do the change for me

I'm happy with the Mobil 1 "Advanced Fuel Economy Full Synthetic". I wouldn't necessarily worry about the oil Toyota uses, it's probably fine. Also, their oil filters are actually pretty good, I try to use those when I remember to get my hands on one before the oil change.
