The third gen Tacoma w/the AT isn't most other vehicles . Thusly they wrote specific procedures for for it which not the name as most other vehicles .
Of course you can do yours how ever you like.
Incidentally, the dealership I use has a "Express" lane for other than the major servicings ie 30K, 60K, etc. The Express lane is not set up for something like a check requiring the necessary temp parameters.
Would prolly need to schedule shop time for that.

That was just the service manager's way of telling him to suck it.

I’ve repeatedly said the dealer doesn’t do shit. Many of the members here know more about their vehicle than the average dealer.

My 2019 2.7 don't have a dipstick for the tranny fluid that I'm aware of.

We need someone on here to come up with a dipstick mod. I would pay good money for it!

Who knows, maybe it's a safety thing that Toyota wants their techs to follow since there's no dipstick and they don't want them interacting with operating temp fluids (that would be dumb if that we're the case imo), or maybe the fluid they're using is only able to be accurately measured when cooler...I've no idea. But the whole "sealed transmission" concept sure did backfire on them it seems...who on earth thought that would be a smart idea, that's what I want to know.

I've actually heard other manufacturers are coming up with sealed diffs and other units which boggles the mind even more.

dealerships, The averge joe can check a dipstick but doesn't know the proper procedure to check a sealed transmission. so the dealer can charge $400 for 15 mins of work

also if you have a slight leak with one that has a dipstick you can just add a little fluid every now and then and be ok. with a sealed unit you have to fix the leak which is more $$$$$$

It's a pain to ck the first time, but you may have to do it yourself to make sure the level is right...
And the trans has to be right at the right temp to ck, within a few degrees to be accurate..

But once you ck it you are good till you change fluid..

As far as checking trans fluid as part of regular maintenance...here's what the service manual states.

What kills me here is it’s still an issue that people have to check fluid on something that should be coming full when you buy it. No faith !

Well then OP they should charge you for it. Not saying it should be $400 but it's not part of the schedule.

What do you mean? Part of the service is check all fluids, and last time I checked the transmission holds a fluid.
By the way, I am a mechanic (not Toyota), and I like to do things properly.

30 second job vs 30 minute job...
Dealer tech is not going to get paid to temp check the trans fluid as a part of routine maintenance.
I wouldn't eat the time either...
Besides, it was the service advisor's decision, not the tech's.

Ill have go to bat for the dealership here. Shortly after getting my new 2014 double cab 4x4 off road it was posted here that toyota may have shipped some of the 2014 with autos with low transmission fluid levels. I took it to my dealer with the post in hand and they took about a half an hour and checked it for me. No cost to me and all was alright with the tranny.
