Looking at spending up to 28k on a Tacoma, 4dr short bed.

I can find 2015 TRD Off Roads in my price range. But I can also find 2016 SR5s in my price range.

I don’t plane on doing any major off roading but the idea of a locking diff on this truck is great.

Any thoughts on comparing the two? Is the 3rd gen that much nicer than the 2nd gen and worth giving up the locking diff?

    Thansk

    I was considering a 2nd Gen .... until I found out the 3rd Gen V6 had 50+ more HP.

    Case closed.

Me personally. I’d get a brand new 2018 SR for at or under $30k.

I thought the SR was pretty bare bones. Don’t need tons of options but cruse control and intermediate wipers would be missed.

Those are both easily added for a few bucks. I think it cost just under 300 to add both.

Took a quick look, 2018 SR, 4dr, 4x4... MARP 33,000. Average sale price, truecar, is 31,500. This is way beyond what I want to spend.

Yes, both 4dr, 4wd. Just the 3rd gen SR 5 and the 2nd gen TDR Off road.

    Found good examples $26k-$28k range.

2nd gen will have atrac (with electric hydraulic boost brake) and rear locker in 4lo.

3rd gen will have trac in 4lo.
Not as good as atrac, but certainly better than no traction control in 4lo.

The 2nd gen OR will certainly be able to get some places that the 3rd gen wont, but if you aren't crawling up rocks I doubt it would be much difference functionally between the two.

I would probably go 2nd gen if everything else is really equal.

(3rd gen OR 2017 here, previously 1st gen)

The 3rd gen will get better gas mileage if you keep it stock. The thought of a locker is nice, but I have been off roading for this long without one, and it can be added later if I do ever need one.

I agree with others though, a new SR would be awesome. It's blank canvas waiting to be made your own!

No the OEM aftermarket parts you can add on your own. There’s a bunch of write ups on here of people adding those parts to their SR’s after they bought them

Easy PnP add ons for a couple hundred bucks.

Not worth paying the next level up just for those.

But personally I'd go even lower on the cost pole and shop for a nice '13 with under 50k miles. I'm not a fan of 3rd gens, but mostly for very different reasons than folks around here.

Both commercial usage vehicles. For good or bad. Good luck.
