Manual or Auto which would you choose?

I was reading in a topic about the new taco's. It got fun to read through and the question arose in my mind...which would you choose a manual trans or auto, and why?

 

You gotta go drive both and see what you like.

For me personally - when I test drove the manual, I didn't like the fact that the rpm's never dropped when you push the clutch in. That's totally different from any manual I've ever driven. I didn't like it.
So, I got the Auto.

 

Manual in these gets a little getting used to. As Janster said, drive both, see what you like more.

 

I have always had manual vehicles. I test drove the six speed and didn't like it at all. The clutch was heavy,shifting notchy,and 1-2 was jerky for shifting.Another thing I didn't like at all with the manual was the placement of the emergency brake. I'm very happy with the automatic. But that's just my opinion and shouldn't mean a damn thing to anyone. Test drive them and see what YOU like better.

 

For me it comes down to the purpose of my truck. If I'm going to go play in the dunes or on the trails and it's going to be raced out, manual. But if it's also a work truck, or commuter, Auto.
A car is different for me I think. I still like a manual in a car even if it's for commuting. So yeah, unless it's dedicated as a play toy, Auto.

 

Well, in my case the 5 speed manual is the only one that can be flat towed without modifications to the truck's driveline. I originally chose the 4 cylinder 5 speed combo primarily on fuel economy. I'm fortunate that it is the one that can be flat towed. Given my needs now, the latter would be the single disqualifier for the other engine/tranny options.

 

I like manuals in cars, but in my Tacoma, I wish I'd bought an auto. The clutch is weak and has a high engagement, first gear is too low, and smooth take offs are rare. I've been driving manuals for 25 years and my 08 Tacoma is probably the worst one I've ever driven. Even my 1968 Camaro with a heavy mechanical clutch was smoother, although harder on the leg. I've never driven a 6 spd Tacoma, so I can't comment on that.

Having said all that, I am used to my truck now and I don't think about much anymore. I just drive it.

 

I agree on the 1-2 shifting, it sucks. But the gear engage is so your injectors shut off.

 

Auto for me. I've always had manuals. But being a truck and my DD, I didn't want to bother with shifting. First auto actually and I'm pretty pleased with it, except it seems kinda confused finding a gear at 60mph.... not a big deal though

 

I have driven standards most of my life and I like the 6 speed. I have no problems with smooth takeoffs and no jerky 1-2 shifts.

Just my personal opinion

 

Having the torque of the V6 probably helps. Someday I need to drive one of those V6 six speeds and see for myself if there is a difference.

The auto in the Tacoma is about as good an auto as you can get, aside from the 2-1 downshift software bug (which is now TSB'd). It's overbuilt (originally designed for a V8), trigger happy to keep you in the right part of the power band, and it has a gated selection for each gear for offroad/foul weather driving and towing. What more could you ask out of an auto?

 

Nothing worse than a clutch in traffic! Or a squeaky clutch like half of you have according to the poll.

Automatic!

 

I just can't stand manual trannys...
I learned to drive on a 5 speed manual.. Dad always told me if you can drive a manual you can drive anything.. While I agree, I just can't stand not having my hands free... Plus Im a very lazy driver... lol

 

Auto is too dangerous for me because i tend to fall asleep driving them. I never plan on ever purchasing an auto vehicle. Jus my .02

 

the ecm keeps engine rpm's up or at same level when clutch is in to make shifting between gears smoother. i.e. -rev matching.

 

cuz its a 6spd -the 1st to 2nd is way shorter plus the torque of the engine, add these and other factors (not knowing how to adjust foot to clutch) =notchy, jerking. the emergency brake has always been in the same location for 10+years. -if u've ever owned/driven a toyota truck.
i have a 4x4 6 spd. i can launch faster than a auto 4x4. ive beaten vetts off the line. ive beaten tc's, v6 camrys. the truck is fast.

 

4.7 powered 4runners (prior to this year's redesign) had the exact same tranny (Toyota A750). It also resides in 4.7L powered second gen Tundras:

You're own your own as far as specs. But we can assume it's capable of taking supercharged 1GR numbers, which results in well above 300tq...

 

I ask because I traded in my 06 for an 2010. I was going to get a auto but I decieded to get a 6spd. Its at the dealer waiting for me to get home. I will be home soon. I could always have them get an auto. Its still on the lot waiting for me to get home...
