My truck is lifted - though not with the HeadStrong Kit. No resonance.

What are you lifted with? If a lift gets rid of this then it’s worth it, although I like the ride height as is.

    Icon Stage 4.

You can also re-gear. My re-gear was cheaper than the suspension.

I had checked on that a while back. So you are howl free?

Our first tacoma was a 2017 Off Road. It howled. Not horribly, but I could hear it if I tried. Re-geared....howl went away.

Traded it in recently because it was an AC and I needed a double cab. Have not re-geared but slapped the lift on. No howl. Never noticed one before the lift however.

I have two sons. Oldest just purchased a 2019 ORP - no howl. Youngest has a 2nd gen - forget the exact year, somewhere between 2012 and 2014 maybe....it howls.

I had a tear down of the stock rear diff when I re-geared. Shop that did the work is very reputable. They basically said that the hino rear ends howl. That it's just a noise and was nothing to be worried about. Take that for whatever it's worth....

Can you provide specifics on what parts that shop used? I'm assuming It's something different than a Toyota dealer would use? Thanks.

I went with the Nitro 4.88s with the front/rear crush sleeve eliminators, solid spacer and shims.

The kit ran about $1,400.00 and included the new seals and pinion nuts.

Labor came out to be just under $1,200.00.

Mine sounds like a kazoo. Still amazed that service managers can take a ride along, acknowledge the sound, and have corporate Toyota tell you it's normal. And that everything is fine. And that they won't do anything for the purchaser. Zip. Zilch. And then the customer is stuck trying to sell an essentially brand new truck that sounds like kazoo. Good luck with that.

No. It's not fine. You don't sell a $38k truck that sounds like a kazoo at different speeds and call it good. Shameful.

Had the TSB done on my 2017 off-road long bed. At least I got new leaf springs out of the deal.....still can hear a slight howl even after new leaf springs and the dampers. It's not doing any damage, so I'm good with it.

If you get tired of their story then force their hand if you want out of the truck. Requisite number of trips and then file LL claim. Just because they say it’s normal doesn’t mean it’s really normal (as we all know). That story didn’t work out well for GM the last time I LL’d one. My issue is there is nothing else I like better so I’ve been pretty forgiving, but the “new” whining/howling is worse post TSB because I now hear it at speeds I never heard it at before. For now I’m content to bellyache about it every now and then as opposed to pulling the trigger on a LL claim. :). Hang in there.

I’m thinking the next TSB for the howling will be noise canceling headphones......

    There ya go!
Mine is very mild, so I can't really complain. I have noticed recently a similar noise around 44 mph, in addition to the 54 mph one

I think what drives me crazy is the fact that we are now in year 4 of the 3rd gen and it still does it. That’s kind of like the domestics did business 30 years ago - “yep they all do it but maybe they’ll fix it for the next generation”. Uh, what about fixing it now?

That was what pissed me off right after I got the truck and did a little research. And I found out this problem goes back 3 years. I felt like I just got scammed for $38k. That was the day I let loose on the dealer. Poor guy. He was speechless. Literally. I bet I moved him one tick closer to retiring after that little sit down we had together.

I feel bad for the dealer because they are caught in the middle. I don’t feel bad for them when they “can’t duplicate” obvious issues and give us crap over a simple TSB. My last service advisor just reported that they duplicated whatever I said but he is gone now and I’ve got one that is more by the books. Like I’ve said before, I’m definitely a marked man at my local dealer. Somehow I never get Toyota surveys anymore.

Problem goes back more than three years.

They issued a TSB for literally the entire run of the second gen for the same thing. I posted the TSB earlier in one of these threads.

I held the handle for the emergency brake while in the howl zone. I didn’t notice any vibration.

    No vibration here either.

My howl is in a recession stage right now. Almost tolerable.

It seems to ebb and flow with the ambient temp.
