Yes, aluminum ones are built a bit different. Notice that transmission skid sits much lower below the cross member. It is ~1.5 inches lower, due to bracing (?), and transfer case skid just follows the line.

I had earlier aluminum skids, they had two sets of holes (high and low mount), but trans skid braces prevented ftom installing it in lower holes. And I was loosing some clearance.

Ps. I now have full set of steal skids, with exhaust reroute for more clearance and protection.

Went from 3rd Gen Taco to 3GT4R to 2nd Gen Taco and finally a V8 4GT4R.
I can say the steel is definitely sturdy as hell. I ended up smacking a rock on accident and the skid took it like a champ. 47121299-6592-4B8E-80D9-B35CBCE61D28.jpg

Thanks to all for the input. It'll be a few weeks before I get a chance to install mine. I'll install the IFS and transmission skids and then eventially get an exhaust reroute. Glad I have the steel ones as those seem to have more holes for oil and maintenance.

If anyone has more info on the exhaust reroute, please post it. Thx

The second and third generation Tacoma skid plates and the transfer case cross member are all identical. Even between the two materials.

The differences are that the third gen front skid plate has an oil filter access plate. The transfer case skid plate is offered in stock exhaust or re-routed exhaust. The re-route gains you approx 1-1/2" in ground clearance.

Take your cross member with you to the shop when you get your exhaust rerouted. That way they can see exactly where it needs to be routed. I did not do that, just showed an example of what others had done, which he did not like how others had been done. He asked about a certain route and I said, I guess as long as it is above that cross beam the skids will bolt to it should be good. It ended up being routed exactly where T-case cross member was, so I had to get it re-rerouted.

Live and learn, right? Awesome tip man. I really appreciate it. I will be out of town for a few weeks and plan to tackle this when I get back.

Based on how out of square my cab and body were bolted on my frame when I tried to put a camper on my only 2-week old truck, I’d say it’s not the skid plate mount that is out of alignment.

Aluminum. You need to put a jack in a middle of the skid, and jack it up until it touches, and then bolt it up.

Speaking from experience. It's supposed to be like that

^ +1. My steel plate also- sorry, forgot about that. @Paint it Black - dont tighten anything until its jacked up tight.

It slides a bit forward and the front raises it higher, there’s a bit of play in the holes to let it do that.

We tried to make the aluminum ones as tight as possible. We don’t really want them flexing too much since they not going to hold up to the same abuse as steel, even with reinforcements.

    Alright I’m confused@Mobtown Offroad

I ordered a reroute transfer case skid. The image in the instructions shows a flat skid with a reroute. This is my skid. Looks like it’s a non reroute skid?

    Any input?

This is a proper reroute skid, it matches the height of cross member, and then goes up a bit to kinda hide a bit more between the frame rails (on its own cross bar), or something like that

Edit. Sorry I didn't mean to speak for @Mobtown Offroad. They can answer it themselves if they want.
