Need help finding the source of the problem. Speedometer does not work at all. Only check engine light is the P0500. Thought it might be the speed sensor in the back of the transmission (5 speed auto) but when I unplugged it the truck wouldn’t shift out of first gear. Thinking about trying the abs wheel speed sensors but don’t want to dump a lot of money and that not be the problem.

P0500 is related to the vehicle speed signal derived from the ABS system. Check for ABS codes. Also, have you done anything lately that could affect wiring between the wheel speed sensors, skid control computer, and the cluster?

I recently went through troubleshooting a P0500 code. Mine turned out to be the gauge cluster had failed. Mine was different because the speedo didn’t stop working.

So the speedometer actually quite working around April, I just haven't gotten around to fixing it. I did some work on the truck last December putting on a 6" lift but the speedometer worked for 4 months after that.

I feel stupid now. I just remembered the ABS/Brake light had been on for a while. I'm guessing its an abs sensor or the abs module. Not sure which is more likely but I can get 4 abs sensors on ebay for $30. I'll try that

Why don't you get the ABS code read?

Not all scanners can read ABS.

    Yours probably doesn’t.

That is a strong possibility. In fact I would agree with that. I has a section for reading ABS but thats probably a gimmick.

Don't throw parts at it yet. Get a scan tool that can show some basic data and see if you have a speedo signal while driving.

If you do then it's probably a gauge cluster issue and you can rule out all the sensors and wiring under the truck

if you don't then you can look at replacing some speed sensors and inspect the harness

Currently looking for someone to scan the ABS codes but I really need to have this fixed by Saturday so I went ahead and ordered the speed sensors. Was only $38 for 4 on prime.

Most local parts stores around me claimed they can’t scan ABS codes. I found one that did, think it was Oreilly’s.

I just installed LT on the rear of my truck. Now I have no speedo. So I’m in the same boat. And had all kinds of shit going on back there. I’ll let you know what I figure out.

Bump, having this same issue. Speedo was all over the place while driving yesterday and then cut out completely

I assume you have a code/data reader of some kind? Does the vehicle speed drop out on the scanner while the speedo needle is acting up?

    This thread seems to be-
Read the abs code, then we can help
Nah, I'll throw speed sensors at it
    Oops that wasn't it.
Ok...... Read the codes for abs.

Obd2 readers that can do Abs are 130$ ish at harbor freight

Hey there buddy! Yes sir i do, i plugged in the Ultragauge and it does not show any speed either while the speedo isnt working. Only have a P0500 code

I did just wire up an aftermarket radio to the factory backup camera, but i dont think any of that would be related..

I just plugged in an enhanced code reader and got the U0100 code stating a "loss of communcation with ECM/PCM A"

Any ideas of where i should start? I did get under the truck and unplug each of the ABS sensors and cleaned the connectors. I may go back out and pull them out and actually inspect the sensors themselves though. I also thought since my truck was a manual, the speed sensor was used off of the transmission. There is what looks like one on the passenger side and it had a little gear oil in the connector. I am going to go pull that and look at it when the trans cools off

It is also worth noting that i have a hypertech speedo calibrator. I guess that little bugger could be the cause of this as well. i may take the dash apart today and see if that makes any bit of difference. It's been working solid for the past few months though

I agree an enhanced code reader is a great investment!

How hard would it be to disconnect the hypertech and see if its affecting the speedo signal. Might be whats causing that communication code

Just a few minutes of lower dash removal/disassembly. I will have to watch a video on how to remove that again. It’s been a few months since installing that
