I searched for a long time to find a Toyota steering wheel with the single stage airbag squib, three spokes, and the stereo controls. The SC400 wheel was exactly what I was looking for. Too bad it's so pricey.

There's a lot of other (better) steering wheels. It's just the issue of the airbag squib being dual stage.

 

like i said before. the charges are the same size.. you could swap em. as for safety i dont know for sure. but i bet its fine...

 

I sure as hell don't want to start swapping airbag squibs. I don't even know if swapping the clockspring and IS300 airbag will allow the airbag to deploy as intended.

 

it will deploy as long as the light isnt on. the circuits simple. changing the wires wont be a problem

 

But the 1st Gen never came with a dual stage charge, how would you accommodate for the existing wiring to function with a dual stage?

 

you dont. you swap the charge and get a sequoia clockspring.

or you pin the dual stage to just work on the high pressure side

 

Would the airbag still deploy even though the charge is different?

 

well i mean it should. the charge will still go off and intern inflate the airbag.

 

I don't really understand how airbag squibs/charges work - but since it's a single versus dual won't the inflation be different?

 

the second stage is there to go off in high speed collisions our trucks didnt have that.. so its probably safe to use use the one stage.... but once again. HUGE LIABILITY HERE. DO AT YOUR OWN RISK. IM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR NUTHIN

I'm already stressed out even touching the SRS system, I can't imagine the implications of messing with the charges.

With the IS300 wheel, the truck side SRS plug is the same. The charge is the same. The only thing that's different is the plug between the airbag and the clockspring.

I love how the IS300 wheel looks and feels, I just have to re-wire the cruise control and 'paddle' shifters to control stereo instead.

 

SRS isnt something to mess with if your not comfortable. but its not as scary as some people think... hell i swap airbags without disconnecting the batteries (gotta have the key off obviously otherwise airbag light)

im not afraid to mess with mine, but ive said it before, i plan on testing things.. ive been saving charges from junkyards to test different bags i can find...

 

I'm comfortable working with SRS systems, it's just I'm adding additional points of failure by touching it and modifying it.

 

your not adding a point of failure messing with the airbag. as long as your not hacking up the actual wiring to the bag and just swapping the clock spring and bag...

 

Nevertheless, I'm adding a different airbag system for a completely different vehicle. A Lexus IS300 airbag was never intended to be used in a Tacoma.
