Thanks. Like is said, I’m a long gun guy and then some, but pistols, not so much. I don’t want to drop a lot of coin and then hear about it later if it gives issues. Well, I’ll hear about it anyway. I appreciate it. I also looked at the Colt but am thinking I could save about $400-500 on the Sig and Kimber. My Kimber rifles have been great.

As stated both those guns would be a fine addition to your gun cabinet.

    I personally prefer Springfields

I am actually doing a Desert Warrior vs MC Operator article so you're in luck.:)

Only mod I did was a flat-wire spring kit from Wilson Combat that I use in all my 1911s. So far, I can maybe get two mags without a malfunction nice looking weapon and all but it is not reliable. For mags I used various ones from GI to Wilson. Malfunctions are Failure to feed and eject. When I test a weapon I buy various brands and bullet types and mix them together and shoot mixed ammo. My train of thought is why own a weapon that only likes certain ammo? So far 800 rounds through the Kimber with to many malfuctions to count. Fit and finish is excellent if I do my job it hits the steel. Reliability make it a no-go for defending myself. I have almost 3k through the MC Operator with no malfunctions.

Some Sig 1911s are dimensionally different in the slide so be aware of that. Also they use an external extractor so if it breaks you have to use their parts. Unlike a traditional internal extractor, it breaks you can buy another one from anywhere. Sig QC is not the best so do research.

For me, reliability is the most important aspect of a weapon. Don't worry about the whole MIM parts in 1911s. Have yet to break an MIM part in a weapon of any type.

You can always get a weapon cerakoted or duracoated, food for thought.

    Article I wrote.

Thank you very much. This is very helpful, and I agree that reliability is the single most important factor. I’m already starting to look outside the desert tan color. I also like the Dan Wesson A2. I like the more traditional 1911s but am early in the shopping process so my mind can and likley will change.

If you are on a budget I recommend the Springfield loaded line or a base model Colt. I have also heard good things about Ruger 1911s.

There is a train of thought that one needs to spend $1.5k plus on a "Good"1911 plenty of reliable and well made 1911s for under $1k.

I appreciate the words of wisdom. I would tend to agree that there are a lot of good ones out there for under $1K. Honestly, guns are just getting better and better. 30 years ago if you had a rifle that would shoot and inch and half group at a 100 yards you’d have yourself k driver on your hands. Now that’s nothing and sub $500 rifles will shoot sub MOA.

I own Springfield and Kimber, and I always steer people towards Springfield. I love my Kimber, but for the money I think SA has the edge.

Out of curiousity, use any Chip Mccormick mags in your rotation?

I only ask because I have a Kimber that works 100% with CMC mags or its one factory Kimber mag, but completely shits the bed with anything else.

I also think its dumb that it will not work with all magazines and I actually hate shooting .45 in general so it barely gets used anymore, but CMC mags are 100% trouble free. I had the Kimber, GI, CMC, and MecGar mags all loaded with the same ammo (different loads on both studies) and could reliably malfunction the gun with GI and Mecgars all day. I just keep the Kimber since I want a 1911 that I can shoot and 1911s are neato.

I do use CMC mags and I believe I only had one malfunction. It is interesting that one won't work with brand A but works great in brand B. I like to tinker so I'll keep shooting it and see what happens. The 1911 can be a harsh mistress.

Mags I treat as a disposable item.

Ron Cohen look it up. His model is to get product out the door regardless.
He has a 1 in 12 rule, 1 out of 12 shooter will shoot a gun enough to have issues with it. I hang with some SIG employees and they have told me some messed up things that go on at SIG. They outsource parts etc. my buddy got handed a box of 100 Romeo red dots and was told to find 25 that work for a demo to an overseas military client.

Kimber is on the rebound FWIW.

I’ve used McCormick mags, they run really well. I use Leatham mags in my personal 1911 cause 9mm.

Something to remember about these guns is the design is over 100yrs old. Papa Browning had rudimentary machines to work with and whole lotta hand fitting, tolerances were measured with a yard stick. The problem is when we started tightening up the tolerances manufactures interpreted the tolerances differently some favored the high side some the low, others shot for the middle. When yah start tightening stuff up you find there are tolerance stacking issues. The production guns today are much better than they were in the 70’s thru the early 90’s. It’s not easy to make a production gun run like a hand built custom, some manufacturers have gotten it figured out though.

This. The fit on my Remington 1911 (made in 2016, apparently) is much tighter than on my 9mm (made in 1992).

Can you imagine what Johnny Boy could do with a 3D CAD system and laser cutters?

    Brass therapy day!!

This was my 5 yd double-taps run. My new Remington 1911 R1 in the center, and a compact 9mm hit the corners.
