Same here @Squeaky Penguin and @m3bassman , my seals were fine, figured why touch them and risk a failed install than leave them as is.

Also agree on the rear axle seal. If the seal wasn't riding on the retainer properly you would know literally the next day.

Yes, rain. Always wondered about that. I really don't need a snorkel, only reason I am considering it is because its $100. I also went wheeling with my buddy once who hydrolock his FJ which has kind of worried me since. hahaha.

Anyone know if a snorkel has to be CARB approved to pass smog checks in CA? I know that you have to run a CARB approved CAI if you go that route, wondering if snorkels are the same.

A CAI is a completely different filter though, doesn’t a snorkel use the stock filter and just change where it gets air?

The ARB dorkel has holes in the back of the head. They claim water will be pushed out of those before continuing down the snorkel.

FWIW, my cheap one doesn't have those, and it hasn't presented a problem.

I know it sounds ridiculous but believe me, CA wants everything 'CARB'...it's not even about emissions really, it's about $$$. Getting CARB approval costs manufacturers a ton of money and CA wants it's piece of the pie. Perfect example is when the Magnuson 3.4l supercharger was "illegal" to have on your truck in CA unless you had the TRD stamped one, even though they were the exact same blower. Magnuson didn't get their CARB cert until a year or two ago.

yeah that's why I'm curious, it sounds like it should be okay but there's not much rhyme or reason to whether or not CA wants something CARB approved

...so we made it home yesterday with no more "crazy spinning" of whatever was engaging earlier. I'd altered my driving style, so that every ~1-2 hours when we'd stop for some reason (fuel, restroom, food, etc.), I'd shift the transfer case from 2hi to 4hi and back - listening to hear it fully seat each time.

With that, I never had the weird engagement (and resulting clunk/disengagement). So, I'm thinking that it likely is something in the transfer case "slipping out of place" for 2wd. Now, need to go investigate how the internals of the transfer case work. Pointers appreciated.

Looks like you can possibly just cut the slits up higher on the ebay one?

    I never thought of that.

I’m going to say it’s debatable, depending on your SMOG tech. You are technically modifying the intake system, therefore it is not permissible.

I find this hysterical that you are worried that after you install a snorkel you could be more likely to get water in your engine. Not trying to be offensive, just found it funny.

I don’t think he’s worried, more just curious.

One time last winter I popped my hood in the mountain and found my CIA, completely covered in snow, was pretty awesome.
