Persimmons, Just at the store and the clerk said she hates them as bad as some of you guys can't stand cilantro. Dose anybody feel that way? I've always liked them.

Love em. Making persimmon beer soon. Just get the tomato shaped ones (fuyu) not the larger hachiya ones or you'll regret it.

They're ok. Wife makes jam out of it. Weve made wine from it. It's ok but the only time i get excited about them is when the deer are flocking to them during bow season.

I have 2 trees in my front yard. love the tree, the fruit not so much. My neighbor sliced them and put them in a dehydrator and they were good. The one thing I hate is coming home and catching the local asian peeps up in my trees taking them. I guess they really like them? Wouldn't be a big deal if they'd come to the door and ask but I have a stone driveway which isn't conducive to ladders and the branches break really easily.

yup, gotta be careful here in CA, they could sue you for falling and hurting themselves when they were the ones trespassing and stealing your fruit.

probably true, I think we're just well known for that story of the burglar that fell from the ceiling in the house he was attempting to rob and either he or his family successfully sued the homeowners. Anyway, don't want to derail the thread....persimmons are okay, I prefer pomegranates myself.

    Pomegranates are awesome.

For anyone that is ever confused on how to open the things up:

They are good when they are about ready to fall off the tree and are smushy. Don't even try to eat them if they are not already in a jam-like state. Last place I lived had a big asian persimmon tree and they would stay on the tree until they rotted and fell off or the birds tore into them. They were great for slathering on toast, or scraped into smoothies. But really not edible unless they were completely liquefied inside.

Word of advise though...don't wear something you're attached to when opening or eating pomegranates...in fact it's best to do so in old workout clothes or in the n00d. Pomegranate stains do not come out of fabric

Fuyu Persimmons are eaten firm, like an apple... they are great! They look like a tomato and not the typical persimmon with a pointy bottom.

Is she from Thailand or Malaysia?
Durian when fresh is supposed to not smell... but if any age off the tree it is like a combination of kerosene and sewage! The thing is it is considered the finest tasting fruit IF you can get it past your nose! Your body sweats durian smell after eating and you burp the smell too! I have had durian cookies and the horrid burping smell that followed is enough to say no to durians! Most other tropical fruit is really good: mangos, papayas, guavas, mangosteens, lychees, rambutan, banana, etc.
