I want to remove this front rail bar (proper name? the one with the two holes in the center) to paint it, and am wondering if I just unbolt the 5 star bolts that run along the bottom, or if there is more to it? are there nuts on the other side? Sorry for all of the questions, just new to this, and don't want to mess anything up.

It slides off once the screws are out. There is a layer of foam tape on the bottom. Not very thick, but removing it and using a bead of silicone when installing levels it out a bit. The height difference was noticeable to me.

So the bolts just go into the front wall, and there's no nuts or washers on the other side? Just wanted to be sure, and not have any surprises or anything falling on the inside/other side.

Speaking as someone who *added* the front bed rail (not included on the 2016! THE HORROR!), it was nothing tricky to install. It just bolted on with a few screws on the top. I don't think you'll have any surprises when you pull it off.

The nuts are captive on the far side. You won't loose anything.

    No surprises.

There are some threaded inserts on the other side. They are mounted to the bed and will not move when the screws are taken out.

Yup. Captive nuts in clips, if I remember right.

I installed the front rail and one of my screws was a PITA to screw back in. Super tight. I'm scared to back it off now. Do you know if those clips are replaceable or are the moulded in?

Sorry! It should have taken pics and cannot now due to the silicone seal. This is all that shows up on the parts page:
    https://parts.toyota.com/a/Toyota_2...7633/REAR-BODY-FLOOR--FENDER/674470-6552.html

I would like to say that they are replaceable, but I am not 100% sure of that.

OOH! could you mount a couple of D rings on those outer two for a little extra tie downs?

Only if you are going to tie down lightweight stuff to them. Otherwise, just get the third accessory rail from a 2nd Gen, one of @At The Helm 's tiedown parts, or get D rings for the bed bolts.

    Edit, just in case:
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DWVN9CK

I got mine for about $40, same listing.

These might also be rivnuts, which would be a piece of cake to swap out if you know someone with a rivnut setter?

Maybe @jkshel24 can post a pic when he pulls the front rail? I couldn't find anything on a few different google image searches.

Whoops, I misread the OP. Thought you were talking about the actual third bed rail (on the cab side).
