I noticed the new Taco's have a chip in the key, so a standard copy from home depot will open my doors, turn the ignition but wont start the car.

Can I buy a regular uncut key from ebay and cut it for my truck? Will this work? If so, where do I buy them?

no you have to go to the dealer and have them do it cause it is a specific chip for each car. You need the number that is on a little metal plate that came on a key when you bought the truck.

I had an issue at the dealership when I went to get my key made, I even told them about the number on the metal plate and they said they would have to "speak with toyota" about it. For whatever reason they're having issues making the new key.

Even when the key is made at the dealer it still has to be programmed into the system, usually for a charge.

I do not think the system ever locks out the user. Just never starts.

I have bought two keys from here. Took them to a local locksmith w/my metal key tag and 20.00. voila! two brand new keys.
    http://www.autotransponder.com/2007_TOYOTA_TACOMA_Key_blank_transponder_chip

    17.00 2-keys
    + 20.00 1-locksmith
    54.00

Stealer ship wanted 77.00 plus 30.00 programing per key. wtf?

p.s. You can get a key cut with no chip. If you by chance have the old key (maybe it was broke, or worn out, etc.) you can take the top part of the key and place it in the dash, tape it or lay it in the coin tray where ever and your chipless key will work. The key (chip) does does not have to be in the ignition like most people think. My broke key was actually laying on the work bench in my garage aprox. 4' away and the transponder picked up and I was able to start my truck. It will run when it is away from the transponder, but it will not start again.

The computer doesn't shut anything down no matter how many times you tried turning the non programed key, But you are able to get the car started for about 5 seconds before the immobilizer realized that its not connecting with the keys though. tntacoma is right you really don't have to get the keys programed just make sure you keep it near the ignition switch.

Is it possible to get the key from a locksmith or are they only able to cut and program it? I really need to get a second key before something happens to my only one.

People tend post problems or issues with the V6 models that has nothing to do with the 4cyl model ie: the 4cyl does not come with immobilizer so no chip in the key no matter what year.

Just checked: it seems standard on v6 and no 4cyl.

Great post. Yes, ordering the keys from that site and finding a capable automotive locksmith is the way to go to save some cash.

    Thanks for your post.

Silver, my locksmith could get them. He tells me in order to get keys made he has to use his license to purchase these from the dealer, Therfore the key price increases. They are many reputable places online to purchase keys. This is just one I have delt with personally. took 3 days to get shipped via USPS and 20 mins to cut and program. So go ahead and get a couple of extra you never know when you will need them.
