cv boot clamp...hose clamp?

Hello all. So wasn't sure where this should go, so I put it here. I'm missing a cv boot clamp on one of the boots. I bought a hose clamp to replace it. Any thoughts or better solutions...the screw part that tightens the clamp is a lil heavy. So at speed since it will be off weight or kinda out of balance, will that cause anything. Hum or vibrations etc. I don't think so but just checking. Thanks in advance.

 

Use a heavy duty zip tie!

 

How bad is it? Are you loosing grease?

You can put a temporary fix on it now - but just make sure you keep an eye on it. Once those boots come loose, you lose grease, and water/dirt get inside which can cause problems later on. Hopefully you caught it soon enough and you didn't lose too much grease.

 

Well it has been off for a bit now. But I have been watching it and very little to no grease. But I havnt been off-road since I noticed, not much water to worry about here in Cali. So hoping I caught it early enough. Fixed one on a Chevy I had like this and thing lasted till I sold her.

 

a band clamp is what you want to use. ...it shouldn't cause any vibrations.

 

Band clamp huh.....is that like the original? Where can get those, auto parts, hardware stores, or the stealer ship.....

 

Just googled band clamp, its same thing I got. Aka hose clamp or worm drive clamp.

 

Same thing happened to me, but i ended up losing a good amount of grease. Luckily it was still under warranty and the dealership ended up replacing the hole axle assy. so I would watch out. I do believe that your clamp will work fine though.

so I had time to kill, went by the stealership. The oe clamp is $7 and change. I ask the dude if it is able to be put on without any disassembly with just the tool...he said oh yeah no problem just the tool is all you need. Hmmm is this true I thought the oe clamps required you to disassemble because the clamp doesnt open up to get around the shaft.

 

my f-ing hose clamp is to wide, pissed. bought two cv replacement clamps from autozone that claims just use pliers then flip a little clam with a screwdriver. Piece of shat! broke the first one and second just would not get tight enough. Well we will see tomorrow what the dealer wants to charge to put the $7 clamp on.....or I'm head to the marine supply thats near by for a clamp like shown up in that tj fourm. Hope this info helps someone else down the road.

anyone one know off hand what a whole new axle assembly cost.

 

i think you can get one from autozone for around $50. ...it makes it very tempting to replace the whole shaft with them being so cheap.

 

suprisingly they are pretty cheap. We just replaced one on my buddy's Nissan Murano. was pretty easy and it was the first time we ever attempted to replace an axle.

 

Nice man, just checked the autozone site....Cardon Reman complete half shafts for $79 with a core charge of $100...$179 aint bad for brand new with limited lifetime warranty! They also had Duralast ones only $70. Anyone try either of these. Off to find a clamp for temporary fix(dealership said today no say tomorrow) untill I get a lil spare cash then I might by two new half shafts. Which will allow me to have two spares, afterbI fix the clamp on the other. Toyota wants $1000 for one haha or $300 to replace one clamp/boot/grease or $400 for both. What a rip.....

 

So I went by west marine a boat supply store, they hose clamps that are the perfect width and the edge is kinda rolled not sharp like normal clamps. Worked great.

 

how do the actual boots look? ...are the fins rubbing on the differential side boot? mine split so i just installed a new shaft. ..but the new shaft's boots are touching waaaay more than they were on the original shaft. ..i may take the band off and see if i can stretch the boot a bit to separate the fins.

 

After replacing several boots on an NSX axle, I will never go back to buying whole new axles when the boot goes out! Its that easy...

Honestly, I would go by honda and ask for their CV boot straps, the old style and DIY.

If you get the right kind of clamp (oem) then yea youll have to take the axle back off to put it on. make sure you have the right pliers to clamp it or you be fighting it for a little while and theres a chance that grease may seep out.

 

Funny you should ask, I will be picking another up in the next few days. The same exact one but on the other axle is leaking a bit. I'll post a pic and size. The one I already did is holding up great.
